Blackpool’s oldest tram line under threat?

Blackpool Council have recently revealed ambitious plans for a major redevelopment of the area around Foxhall Square, close to the old tram depot at Rigby Road. The scheme, known as the ‘Foxhall Village’ project, would ultimately provide housing for hundreds of people – but there is a good chance that this may have implications for the oldest surviving section of the Blackpool tramway.

Update on Centenary car 643

Several weeks ago, we featured Blackpool Centenary car 643 in its new home at Broadwater Caravan Park in our occasional ‘Lost Trams’ feature. Although at a glance the car remains unchanged, internally some alterations have been made since then and it therefore seems only right to offer this small update on an old friend.

New drivers for old trams in Blackpool

A pleasing development on the Blackpool tramway has seen the sole remaining Brush Railcoach 631 out and about on the system for driver training purposes. Although crew training on the new Flexity2 class has taken place throughout the season, training on heritage cars has been much less common so this is very welcome indeed, especially as the tramway approaches some of its busiest days of the year.

British Trams Online advertise on Blackpool ‘Boat’ 233

Regular readers of British Trams Online should be aware that, earlier this year, we sponsored the repainting of Blackpool ‘Boat’ car 233. The tram, owned by the Lancastrian Transport Trust, moved to Beamish Museum earlier this year on loan for a period of at least two years. In return for our donation, the Museum agreed to display some tasteful advertising posters on car 233 to thank us for our support.

Heaton Park set to celebrate Halloween

For the first time ever, the Heaton Park Tramway in Manchester is set to hold a special Halloween event on Sunday 28th October. This should make a welcome change from the normal enthusiast-based events held by this particular heritage line, and although the chance of a tram ride through the park in darkness will be a draw to many tram fans, hopefully this event will also appeal to a wider audience.

Widened Balloons for half-term comeback?

Trevor Roberts, the Managing Director of Blackpool Transport Services, has announced that it is planned to use the available modified Balloon cars, often referred to as the ‘B Fleet’, over the busy autumn half-term school holiday period towards the end of the 2012 illuminations. This is traditionally the busiest week of the year for the tramway and so it makes good sense to run more trams, especially as passenger numbers have exceeded all expectations so far this year.

Lost Trams 5: Blackpool Centenary car 644

644 is one of the eight Centenary class cars built by East Lancashire Coachbuilders during the 1980s for year-round operation in Blackpool. After providing sterling service for more than twenty years, the class were retired from front-line service after use on Sunday 6th November 2011, and 644 was subsequently sold to Farmer Parr’s Animal World at Broadwater near Fleetwood, becoming the first of its type to leave Blackpool for good in January 2012.

Blackpool 002 reappears – in Berlin!

Due to this website being titled British Trams Online, we very rarely feature trams outside the British Isles – but today we are making an exception due to the appearance of a tram which is destined for a long operating career in the UK being displayed at a transport event overseas. The vehicle in question was Blackpool Flexity2 002, which has already briefly operated on the Fylde Coast before returning to Germany for remedial attention.

Can you help? The Aberdeen Tramway Rosette Appreciation Society seek information

We have been contacted by the Aberdeen Tramway Rosette Appreciation Society who are eager to find out which tram systems throughout Britain had tram rosettes instead of poles to hold up the overhead, particularly in the centre of towns and cities in England and Wales. They are looking to see whether anyone reading this might know of the location of any such objects on old tram routes so that they can conclude their investigations. If you can help them in anyway please contact us at our usual email address (gareth.bto@hotmail.co.uk) and we will pass the information on to the ATRAS.
