In Pictures: Ballast goes down on delta junction

The rail replacement work on the Park Square delta junction at the core of the South Yorkshire Supertram network is continuing to progress with a little over 10 days to go before it is all due to be finished. Latest photos from Stuart Cooke.

Since we were last at the site of the delta junction new ballast has now been laid to go with the new rails which had previously been installed. Around 440 tram journeys pass through the junction every day and so this is a key part of the network, making this project vital to ensure a reliable service across the city can continue to be operated.

Barriers continue to sit around the worksite but this view shows us (looking away from the city centre) the freshly laid ballast as tracks go in all directions.

The ballast pile at Fitzalan Square continues to go down.

A number of vehicles are hired in to help with the work, including this road rail vehicle which has been involved in the spreading of the ballast. (All Photographs by Stuart Cooke, 19th August 2026)
