In Pictures: A look at preserved Metrocar 4001

It should be remembered that whilst a large number of the Metrocars have headed away for scrapping there is (so far) one which has entered preservation. 4001 – one of the prototypes – was donated to the Stephenson Steam Railway, which just happens to be on the site of the original Metro test track, and since arriving there on 11th September 2025 work has been underway to improve its appearance.

SNP call on a new route for trams to Granton

With Scottish Parliament elections set to take place next month the political hot potato of trams in Edinburgh seems to be on the agenda again with one of the SNP’s candidates for Holyrood (a current SNP councillor) stating that the SNP Group are against both proposed routes of the tramway to Granton. His pronouncement as part of his campaigning then saw the current Council Transport Convener say that his comments would jeopardise the entire scheme. All in all a pretty standard week for tram expansion in Edinburgh!

Heaton Park Tramway to host Model Tramway Exhibition

Although there is no announcement of when we can all enjoy a ride on a full sized tram at the Heaton Park Tramway just yet (work to repair the substation remain in hand thanks to funding through Manchester City Council), it has been confirmed that they will be hosting a Model Tramway Exhibition on Saturday 6th June.

West Midlands Metro and Clayton Hotel announce partnership

Throughout the construction of the first phase of West Midlands Metro’s Birmingham Eastside extension we have been mentioning how the temporary terminus at Millennium Point is by the Clayton Hotel, and now it has been announced that the two companies have launched a partnership. This will see anyone staying at the hotel – which is just a stones throw from the Millennium Point terminus (and not too far away from Albert Street either) able to enjoy discounted tram travel during their stay.

Luas service partially suspended after fuel protests

Fuel protests across Ireland have caused major disruption in the country with Dublin particularly hit hard. This has led to services on Dublin’s Luas Green line being severely disrupted, with the first disruption taking place on Tuesday 7th April 2026 and continuing since.
