Sheffield 74 returns to service

Having missed the last two seasons at Crich, Sheffield 74 has returned to service following the completion of its full overhaul and repaint in the workshops over the winter. 74 was first used for the year on Wednesday 28th March – becoming the seventh tram to be used for the main service so far in 2018.

In Pictures: Wolverhampton extension works commence

Work is now starting on extending Midland Metro at both ends of the current line with the commencement of road closures and diversions at Wolverhampton to allow the first construction works to take place. Bus services were diverted from Sunday 18th March and the location of the works will also affect the bus station.

NET only fares frozen for third year in a row

Nottingham Express Transit have confirmed that all tram only fares will remain at the same levels for a third year in a row. There will be a modest rise in the cost of multi-operator fares as a result of some local bus operators introducing increases in their fares.

Tram passengers across England continue to be satisfied

It seems that it doesn’t take long for another survey of passenger satisfaction to come along with the latest results of the Transport Focus survey showing a continued high rating on five tramways: Blackpool Tramway, Manchester Metrolink, Midland Metro, Nottingham Express Transit and Stagecoach Supertram. The overall satisfaction rate is at 91%, which although down from the 2016 figure – mainly because Edinburgh Trams chose not to be involved – is still very high, with the Blackpool Tramway leading the way at 97% satisfaction.

NET delays after tram/car collision

A tram was involved in a collision with a road vehicle at University Boulevard just as the rush hour was starting to pick up on Friday 23rd March causing delays to the network whilst the incident was cleared. At the moment it is too early to say what caused the collision but the tram had to be removed from the scene and returned to depot with some damage. Services on the whole network were initially held to allow the incident to be assessed before the go-ahead was given to resume. Fortunately the tram was removed fairly quickly although further delays were experienced as the service was reformed.

Strike set to cause major disruption for DLR

A 48 hour strike called by the RMT on the Docklands Light Railway is likely to see no services at all run between 0400 on Wednesday 28th March and 0359 on Friday 30th March. The dispute is between members of the RMT and operators of the DLR, KeolisAmey Docklands with the union claiming that the company are continuing to treat their members “like dirt”.

27 more trams for Metrolink as part on new Congestion Deal

Manchester Metrolink could be set for 27 new trams to help reduce overcrowding on the busiest lines of the network as part of a new “Congestion Deal” announced by Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester. There would also be the introduction of new pre-peak tickets along with a discount for businesses that agree to implement flexible working.

Blackpool Standard 147 ready for return to use

After a two year absence from the Blackpool tramway, Standard car 147 is set to make a very welcome return to the heritage service over the forthcoming Easter Bank Holiday weekend. As it stands, the freshly repainted tram is expected to make its debut on Saturday 31st March – the first of three ‘Gold’ running days over the long weekend.

Urbos3 26 returns to Wednesbury

Back on 20th and 21st September 2017 Midland Metro’s CAF built Urbos3 26 left Wednesbury Depot for repairs at Wolverton Works following a derailment and now some six months later it is back in town. As with its departure it arrived in two sections on two separate days with part one turning up on Thursday 22nd March and the remainder on Friday 23rd March.

More plans unveiled to improve cycle safety in Edinburgh

A public consultation has been launched by the City of Edinburgh Council as further changes have been proposed to improve cycle safety around the city’s tram network. The first phase of improvements – which included new red surfaced cycle lanes at key locations – were introduced last autumn with phase two – which will see Advanced Stop Line boxes installed – due to follow by the end of this month. Now the third phase of proposed improvements is out for consultation with the Council keen to find out the views of local residents before they are implemented.

CityClass tram returns to Blackpool

In a rather unexpected development, the Trampower project’s prototype ‘CityClass’ vehicle, previously known as 611, has returned to Blackpool. The tram was delivered to Rigby Road on Wednesday 21st March, with very few people seemingly aware of its return until it actually arrived back on site.
