The next new tram line due to open in the UK is likely to be the second phase of the West Midlands Metro Birmingham Westside extension with service due to commence between Library and Hagley Road, Edgbaston at some point in 2021. Good progress is being made on construction works and in this article we take a look at two of the three new tramstops which now have fully glazed shelters.

Stadler named Business of the Year at Rail Business Awards 2021

Stadler – the company who will be supplying the Tyne and Wear Metro with 42 new trains by 2024 as well as now maintaining the current fleet, and previous supplier of trams for London Tramlink – have been named Rail Business of the Year at the Rail Business Awards 2021, which was held virtually on 25th February 2021.

Seaton Tramway announce plans to reopen 12th April

The Seaton Tramway in Devon are planning to reopen from Monday 12th April, subject to the lifting of government imposed restrictions. This is the second heritage tramway to confirm their plans for 2021 and will initially see a 30 minute frequency tram service between Seaton and Colyton.

Full sized replica of new Metro trains cab built

Drivers on the Tyne and Wear Metro are to get a chance to “try out” the cab areas of the new trains being built by Stadler with a full size and fully fitted out replica having been made. It will help with workforce familiarisation in preparation for the delivery of the new trains which are due to enter service from 2023.

Manchester Metrolink Engineering Works this month

There will be engineering works on Manchester Metrolink affecting both the Altrincham and Bury lines in March which will see the tram service temporarily replaced by buses. The work will be taking place on Sunday 14th March (Altrincham) and Saturday 27th/Sunday 28th March (Bury).

One to file under “I didn’t see that happening” is the news that a long-lost advertising livery is to be resurrected on Blackpool Brush Car 634 with a version of its 1990s Coral Island Terror Train advert to be reapplied as part of what is being described as an “eye-catching role within the heritage tram operation”.
