Since the first lockdown began last March we have featured articles on Kids Activity Packs which have been released by Edinburgh Trams with various colouring sheets and other activities included. And now anyone who has gone through those packs with their children many times can download a similar pack from Blackpool Transport!

Designs for Stevedore Place in Leith revised after discussion

Late in 2020 it was reported that local residents in Stevedore Place, Leith were concerned about the loss of trees when the Trams to Newhaven tram extension was rebuilt with the project team promising to review the plans to see if any changes could be made. Now, it has been confirmed that a “boulevard” feel will be kept with new trees planted along the south side of the street and a row of hedges on the north.

First plans unveiled for redevelopment of Rigby Road Depot

At the end of last year when it was announced that a number of privately owned trams would be asked to leave Blackpool Transport’s Rigby Road Depot one of the reasons given was for the redevelopment of the complete 2.88 hectare site. And now the first stage of what is said to be a five year plan has been unveiled with a planning application submitted for one of the garages in the bus side of the complex.

Another bridge demolished as work on Brierley Hill Metro line continues

So far most of the work to construct the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill line of the West Midlands Metro has mainly consisted of demolition and so it is again with another bridge being removed in the latest sign of progress. The Tame Valley canal bridge was removed earlier this month – the fourth structure to be demolished in recent months.

Stop by Stop Blackpool Tramway: Starr Gate

From this week “Stop by Stop” heads north to the Blackpool Tramway as for the next few weeks we take a look at the modern light rail stops of the tramway. As with Nottingham Express Transit, we have split the line between Starr Gate and Fleetwood Ferry into different sections and there will be three sections featuring the light rail stops and then a further one looking at today’s heritage stops. The first part of the series will show the stops between Starr Gate and North Pier and we will only be featuring the stops as they have been since the upgraded tramway opened, so even though in most cases there has been a tramstop there for many years we will only be looking back to 2012 when the first trams ran on the modernised tramway. In this first edition we will start at the beginning , which is Starr Gate.

Tram-Train services reduced

There has been a further reduction in service on the Stagecoach Supertram network and this time it’s the Tram-Train service which will be affected with a 50% reduction in frequency to just one an hour. No other changes have been made to the conventional tram routes for now.

New Head of Infrastructure Delivery appointed at Nexus

New Metrolink stops to be explored in Transforming Cities Fund 2 proposals

The Mayor of Greater Manchester’s vision for the future of transport in the region – the Our Network plan – is set to move a step further forward with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority being asked to approve the latest set of proposals from the Transforming Cities Fund 2. £69.5 million worth of transport improvements are being proposed and although this time trams are not at the top of the plans there is still an idea of new Metrolink stops.

Tram Pub Signs: Bispham Hotel, Blackpool

It was a pub that we mentioned when first taking a look at pub signs but didn’t illustrate it at the time – but remedy that now! The Bispham Hotel in Red Bank Road, Blackpool is located adjacent to the entrance to the Sainsbury’s store which is on the site of the old Bispham tram depot and so it doesn’t take a lot of working out as to why there may be a tram on the sign!

Douglas Bay Horse Tramway said to be crucial for Manx tourism

In what is probably not a surprise to many readers of this website, the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway has been flagged as being a crucial element of Manx tourism. The comments were made by the outgoing director of Manx National Heritage, Edmund Southworth, who thinks the next three to five years will see domestic tourism within the British Isles enjoying a major revival and that the Isle of Man’s unique offering will have its part to play.
