Life sized Metro train replica makes it to the Newcastle Theatre Royal stage

Last year we ran an article on a production of  “Gerry and Sewell” which was playing at the Live Theatre. Telling the story of two Gateshead lads who are desperate to see Newcastle United play at home it included a replica of a Metro train as part of the set and now with the play moving to the Theatre Royal in the city, the replica of 4001 in its 1980s livery has gone along for the ride as well!

NET strike suspended after a day of action

Strike action by GMB union members which was set to cause major disruption for Nottingham Express Transit services during the Goose Fair ended up being suspended after just a day with a new pay deal agreed. The new deal should see staff receive a pay increase of 8.5% over the next two years (so will hopefully avoid the same issue happening for next year’s Goose Fair).

Specialist users get familiar with new Metro trains

With the arrivals of the new Tyne and Wear Metro trains being built by Stadler continuing, a group of specialist users have been given the chance to get familiar with the trains. Sense Ability Matters (SAM) – a charity which supports people with sights and hearing loss across Gateshead and North Tyneside – too part in a familiarisation session at the Nexus Learning Centre in South Shields.

Edinburgh Trams record operating loss again in 2023

New figures published in the latest accounts for Edinburgh Trams have shown that the system recorded a £10.3 million operating loss in 2023. This is the sixth year in a row that a loss has been recorded, but most of the losses can be attributed to the annual asset fee which Edinburgh Trams have to pay to the City of Edinburgh Council.

Councillor raises concerns over Blackpool tram overcrowding

A local Councillor who represents the Norbreck ward in Blackpool has claimed overcrowding on the tramway system could be putting passengers at risk of injury. Cllr Julie Sloman (Conservatives) has said that the issue has been mentioned to her by a constituent and she has then raised it at a full Council meeting.

New wildlife mural unveiled at St Werburgh’s Road

St Werburgh’s Road on the Manchester Metrolink lines out to East Didsbury and Manchester Airport has become the second stop to have its lift shaft brightened up with a mural with artwork depicting local wildlife having been unveiled. Commissioned by the Chorlton Civic Society the idea behind the mural is to brighten up the surrounds of the stop.

Nearly 10,000 NET passengers fined for not paying their fares

Nottingham Express Transit have confirmed that since their crackdown on fare evasion started in January almost 10,000 people have been fined. A total of 9.700 penalty fare notices have been handed out between January and August 2024 with 2,100 people also having been prosecuted through the courts.

In Pictures: A quick trip to the Seaton Tramway

The Seaton Tramway in Devon continues to operate daily until Sunday 3rd November with the Yellow timetable having been reintroduced from Monday 23rd September. This means trams run between 1000 and 1600 at 20 minute intervals (ending one hour earlier than the peak timetable) but that still gives plenty of time to enjoy a ride along the Axe Estuary. UK Tram Summit sets the scene for the future

Heritage Award for iconic Hanson’s Ale bridge on Metro extension

The iconic Hanson’s Ale bridge in Tipton, which was one of the final major structures to be installed on the Wednesbury to Dudley section of the Brierley Hill extension on West Midlands Metro, has won a prestigious heritage award. Midland Metro Alliance and design partner, Tony Gee, have been recognised for their collaborative design and delivery of the installation for the structure at the Institution of Civil Engineers West Midland awards.

In Pictures: Stadler Tram-Trains at Taff’s Well

The Cardiff Metro project is the second location in the UK which will see the introduction of a fleet of Stadler Tram-Trains. The class 398 units are similar to the 399s which operate on Sheffield’s Supertram network and deliveries have been ongoing since 2023, although entry into service has yet to start.
