One broken rail fixed as another fault is found in Sheffield

Firstly, the good news is that the broken rail on West Street in Sheffield City Centre has been fixed allowing tram services to run to Middlewood and Main Bridge again. But on the flip side of the coin there is another track fault on Park Grange Road which means the Blue and Purple routes are affected – and for a time on Saturday 11th January 2025 both faults were being dealt with at the same time.

This second track fault in a few days again looks likely to be down to the recent sub-zero temperatures and is on Park Grange Road (on the Blue and Purple routes between Sheffield Station and Gleadless Townend). When it was first reported on Saturday 11th January revised services had to be introduced with the Purple route suspended completely whilst initially for the Blue route it was running Cathedral-Sheffield Station and between Gleadless Townend and Halfway as well.

The timeline of this track fault being discovered meant that there was crossover with the previously reported West Street broken rail and so on Saturday 11th January there were two issues meaning Blue route services could only run between Cathedral and Sheffield Station on the city side of operations.

Fortunately, work on the broken rail at West Street was completed in time for services to resume on the morning of Sunday 12th January which means at the time of writing the following tram service is running:

  • Blue – Malin Bridge to Sheffield Station and Gleadless Townend to Halfway
  • Purple – no service
  • Yellow – Meadowhall to Middlewood (normal service)
  • Tram-Train – Rotherham Parkgate to Cathedral (normal service)

To help passengers complete their journeys there is a replacement bus service (BL1) running between Fitzalan Square and Gleadless Townend every 20 minutes.

In addition the following ticket acceptance is in place on First Bus services:

  • Services 8 and 8a: Between Sheffield City Centre and Manor Top
  • Services 18 and 18a: Between Manor Top and Gleadless Townend
  • Services 47 and 48: Between Sheffield City Centre and Herdings Park
  • Service 51: Between Sheffield City Centre and Gleadless Townend
  • Service 73: Between Sheffield City Centre and Manor Top
  • Service 120: Between Sheffield City Centre, Manor Top and Crystal Peaks

Currently there is no estimate for when services along Park Grange Road can start to operate again with South Yorkshire Supertram saying: “Staff are doing all they can to get services back up and running. Further updates will be provided as soon as they are available. We apologise to those impacted by the disruption.”
