Another photo from Crich in 1982 in “Picture in Time”.
Chesterfield 8 is a horse car built in 1899 which operated for just five years on its home system before it was electrified (and replaced by trams such as no. 7 which is also part of the national collection). After it spent time in private use for other purposes, it was preserved by Chesterfield Corporation who restored the tram and kept it stored on their premises. It moved to London in the 1950s having been presented to the British Transport Commission and it was displayed at the Museum of British Transport at Clapham. When this was closed the tram was placed in store until 1982 when it moved back to Chesterfield for another restoration.
And 1982 is where this photo picks up the story as after its restoration – which included the discovery of this livery, instead of using the electric tram livery as now seen on 7 – it was moved to Crich when it was launched into service on 7th July. It would remain at Crich until the September before it went back to Chesterfield. It would return to Crich in 1985 on a more permanent loan and more recently ownership has transferred from the Science Museum to the Tramway Museum Society.
This photo shows 8 outside the Derby Assembly Room on a undated 1982 image.
