Sunday 15th March saw the start of full driver training on the West Midlands Metro extension to Millennium Point, as preparations ramp a gear ahead of services starting on the first phase of the Birmingham Eastside extension. A temporary timetable has also been introduced onto the network during the driver training to ensure that all drivers are getting the chance to be cleared for the new line.

Major system upgrade on the way for Metro control room

The Tyne and Wear Metro control room is to undergo a £8.8 million upgrade to key systems essential for day-to-day operations. Technology which manages key assets such as Metro power supply, fire and intruder alarms, lighting, lifts, escalators, and tunnel drainage pumps, will be renewed during the work to an upgraded digital standard.

Llandudno & Colwyn Bay 7 to commemorate 70 years since the last tram

On 24th March, it will be 70 years since the last tram on the Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Electric Railway ran. To commemorate the occasion, the Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Tramway Society will be taking out tramcar no. 7 for a hauled run behind their Matador lorry, making a rare trip along the whole of the line.

In Pictures: West Midlands Metro 46 returns to service

A tram which has been out of use on the West Midlands Metro for approaching two years has returned to action, marking its full first day back out on Monday 16th March 2026. That tram is 46 – one of the 21-strong class of Urbos100 trams built between 2021 and 2023 for the network.

Cutty Sark DLR Station to reopen on 23rd March 2026

The DLR station at Cutty Sark is due to open again from 23rd March 2026 after a 10 month closure which has seen new state-of-the-art escalators installed with the aim of improving access at the busy station on the Lewisham line of the network. The reopening is earlier than planned and will see the station open in time for the London Marathon and Easter holidays.

Arup and Tony Gee join forces on next phase of Coventry Very Light Rail

Study launched into potential Mass Rapid Transit system for Greater Cambridge

The Cambridge Growth Company (CGC) and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) have launched the preparation of a Project level Strategic Outline Business Case for a potential Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system for Greater Cambridge. This is said to be an important step in developing a long-term, sustainable transport solution for the region – and it could be a tram or light rail system, or alternatively bus rapid transit or automated systems.

West Midlands Metro customer satisfaction reaches new high

A new survey has shown that customer satisfaction on the West Midlands Metro has reached a new high with 93% of those who took the time to respond saying they were either satisfied or highly satisfied with their journey on the network – a 2% rise from the previous year.

Nottinghamshire Police appeal for information after chemical substance sprayed in tram driver’s face

Police have appealed for information after a chemical substance was sprayed in a tram driver’s face on 5th February 2026. As part of their appeal they have released images of four youths they wish to identify as they believe they may be able to assist with their investigation.
