Just one day after some of the trams in the Exhibition Hall at Crich Tramway Village were moved around to make space for the future arrival of Bournemouth 85, there was even more shunting of some non-operational trams on Sunday 23rd July. This time the purpose was to enable cleaning of two trams whilst a third was also moved outside to allow access to them.

Any enthusiasts visiting Crich Tramway Village on Saturday 22nd July were treated to the sight of some very unusual trams being moved in and out of the Exhibition Hall. The display is being re-organised to make space for the imminent arrival of Bournemouth 85 which involved some of the trams being shunted onto the traverser and moved onto different tracks.

Communications fault causes complete Metrolink suspension

Saturday 22nd July was a day to forget for Manchester Metrolink with the entire network suspended on two separate occasions owing to a communications fault. The first suspension was short lived but the second time around it saw the end to services for the rest of the day.

Full services resumes on NET

After four days services are once again running on the whole Nottingham Express Transit system with repairs completed to the overhead in the Basford area. Trams started to be able to run between David Lane and Wilkinson Street late on Friday 21st July before a full service resumed from the start of service the following day.

‘Tram Sunday’ brings the crowds out for heritage trams

Following on from the record-breaking heritage tram service between Blackpool and Fleetwood on 15th July, Sunday 16th July saw the annual Fleetwood Festival of Transport, more commonly known as Tram Sunday, take place. This included another intensive heritage service, but this time with trams (including the normal LRT service) all terminating at Fisherman’s Walk whilst the festival was in full swing along Lord Street in Fleetwood.

Dewirement forces one day closure for Crich

On Friday 21st July, a serious dewirement incident occurred at Crich Tramway Village, forcing the attraction to close for the day. Thankfully the damage has now been rectified sufficiently for the museum to re-open as normal on Saturday 22nd July.

Major disruption after overhead line damage at Basford

They say bad luck comes in threes and hopefully that is the case for Nottingham Express Transit with the third high profile incident in recent months seeing major damage to the overhead at Basford. The damage happened due to a technical fault with a pantograph at approximately 0730 on Tuesday 18th July and currently services remain suspended through the area.

Intensive service for Douglas Bay Horse Tramway during Festival

Since we published our Event Preview on the Manx Heritage Transport Festuval further details have been released by Isle of Man Transport on the services which will run on the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway for the duration including three days of a special intensive service! The highlight looks set to be Sunday 30th July when unusual trams will be in use throughout the day.

Tynwald approve funding for Douglas Prom reconstruction

The future of the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway should be secure for now after Tynwald approved funding for the £20.73 million reconstruction of Douglas Promenade which will include tracks for the horse trams all the way between Derby Castle and the Sea Terminal. The decision comes after several years of debate and the constant changing of plans and was almost approved unanimously at the July sitting of Tynwald.

New operator starts on Metrolink

There has been a changing of the guard at Manchester Metrolink with KeolisAmey Metrolink (KAM) officially taking over from RATP Dev Metrolink as the new operator of the UK’s largest tram network. The new contract will run for up to 10 years and has seen the appointment of a new Managing Director.

In Pictures: Bluebird’s restoration progresses

The major project in Crich’s workshop is currently the full restoration of London County Council 1 – or Bluebird if you prefer – with the work continuing to progress as this major project reaches another crucial stage. The two decks of the tram are now as one once again with Bluebird currently resting on jacks to allow further work to take place.

In Pictures: Crich Edwardian Event

Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th July saw the annual Edwardian Event at Crich Tramway Village with over 1,000 visitors attending at some point over the weekend. As well as the usual re-enactors – including a visit from Oscar Wilde – and a talk on the Manchester Corporation Tramways World War I Memorial Plaque there was an intensive tram service in operation which, on the Saturday, included the latest visit of Joseph to take Sheffield 15 for a spin between Town End and the depot crossover. Record-breaking heritage service to Fleetwood!

Something really rather special happened on the Blackpool tramway on Saturday 15th July 2017 with relatively little fanfare, when an enhanced heritage service operated as part of the Fleetwood ‘Tram Sunday’ weekend. Normally, Tram Sunday itself is the main event of the weekend but arguably the Saturday was even better for tram enthusiasts, with the most frequent heritage tram service to Fleetwood since 2009!

In Preview: Manx Heritage Transport Festival 2017

Blackpool Brush car 623 relaunched in style!

Following its recent return to Blackpool on loan from the Heaton Park Tramway for its 80th anniversary year, Brush Railcoach 623 has now entered service back on its original home tramway for the first time since November 2009. The tram was officially launched back into service with an evening outing for enthusiasts on Friday 14th July, and it was then used on heritage service over the next two days.
