Nurse of the Year names her tram

The latest recipient of Nottingham’s Nurse of the Year, Christina O’Loughlin, has unveiled her name on the side of Citadis 220 in a special ceremony at Wilkinson Street Depot. Student Nurse Christina was the guest of honour at the ceremony on Monday 31st July.

Happy Birthday Docklands Light Railway!

Officially opened by HM The Queen in the summer of 1987 the Docklands Light Railway is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. A much changed network to the original 11 train, 15 stop line the DLR has helped to kick start regeneration in the area as well as providing a vital transport service across London’s Docklands.

Purple route back to normal

After several weeks of disruption the Purple route returned to full tram operation from Wednesday 2nd August. On Mondays to Saturdays only early morning and evening services were operated by tram due to tram shortages with a replacement bus in service at other times. However now these temporary shortages have been solved its back to normal for the trams from Herdings Park.

In Pictures: Brush car 623 at Starr Gate

Starr Gate Depot at Blackpool remains fairly rare territory for members of the heritage fleet, but on 1st August visiting Brush Railcoach 623 headed into the modern building for the first time in its life – indeed the last time 623 was in Blackpool before the start of its current loan period, the depot hadn’t even been built!

Purple Tram Fridays come to Crich

Blackpool Jubilee 762 is certainly a tram that polarises opinion but has proven to be popular with children thanks to its old Nickelodeon Land all over advert with various cartoon characters including Spongebob Squarepants on the ends. Over the past few years it is a tram which has seen limited use on normal service days but all that is about to change with the first ever Purple Tram Fridays announced for Crich Tramway Village in August.

In Pictures: Horse Tram Day at Crich

Monday 31st July was the latest opportunity for visitors to enjoy the delights of a horse drawn tram at Crich with Joseph once again being used to haul Sheffield 15 between Town End and the Depot crossover. The day also saw a normal electric tram service in operation with Chesterfield 7, Glasgow 22 and Oporto 273 also in service. Photos from Hazel Quarmby.

In Pictures: New advert for 261 as Edinburgh launch late night trams for Festival

Edinburgh Trams 261 has received new adverts to publicise the Edinburgh Festival and the special tram service running on Saturday nights throughout August. This service will see trams running every half hour between midnight and 0530 on Saturday night/Sunday morning to help festival goers make the most of a packed programme of events.

Three tram systems in one day completed for charity

On Thursday 20th July Chris Holmes, Metrolink Asset Management Technical Assistant at Transport for Greater Manchester, completed a challenge of travelling across three tram systems in England in one day – all in the name of charity. Starting on Metrolink Chris moved across to Sheffield’s Supertram network before finishing up on Nottingham Express Transit.

Bridge opens linking tramstop to Queen’s Medical Centre

A new pedestrian bridge has opened linking the Nottingham Express Transit tramstop with the Queen’s Medical Centre. Named in honour of Professor Sir Peter Mansfield – who also has a tram named after him – the bridge is 90 metres long and will provide direct access to the hospital. The bridge was officially opened on 28th July – the 40th anniversary of the Queen officially opening the hospital.

Centenary car 645 returns home

Following on from the recent news that Blackpool Centenary car 645 had been declared surplus to requirements recently by its owners, the tram departed from Windy Harbour Caravan Park at Little Singleton, where it had resided since January 2012, on 27th July. The tram left for a new home – well, actually, its old home – as it has become the latest of the traditional fleet to return to Blackpool having been acquired by the Blackpool Heritage Trust.

In Pictures: Birkenhead 20 arrives at Blackpool!

Birkenhead 20 made the journey by road from Birkenhead to Blackpool on Thursday 27th July, marking the start of its British Trams Online sponsored loan. The tram will be spending 12 months by the seaside and will receive attention to its wheels and tyres during this time, as well as operating as a special guest on the tramway’s heritage tours.

Tram events – how much notice is enough?

In fairness, most major tram events are advertised well in advance with the main players in the preservation scene usually announcing a full calendar of planned big events at the start of each year covering the 12 months ahead.

In Pictures: The Great Exhibition Hall at Crich

As has been reported recently on British Trams Online, there has been a good deal of tram shunting at Crich Tramway Village recently, with a number of the static collection moved around in order to make space inside the Exhibition Hall for Bournemouth 85, which is due to arrive at Crich later this year.
