Man hit by tram in Dublin

A man was injured after he was hit by a tram on Dublin’s Luas network during the early evening of Thursday 29th October. He was reported as suffering from minor injuries after he was struck by a tram between the stops at Leopardstown Valley and Ballyogan Wood on the Green line. The driver of the tram was also taken to hospital as a precaution. While the emergency services dealt with the incident no Green line services ran between Brides Glen and Sandyford.

In Pictures: Blackpool Brush 621 on tour for the FTT

Friday 23rd October saw the Fylde Transport Trust run a tour of the illuminations with Brush Car 621 hired for the occasion which included trips to both Fleetwood and Starr Gate. This was a scaled down tour from the original plan with Balloon 715 not required and the planned later evening tour also cancelled with Blackpool now under tier 3 Covid restrictions.

NET services disrupted as car gets stuck on bridge again

Its not the first time its happened and it probably won’t be the last but Nottingham Express Transit were disrupted for a time on Wednesday 28th October after a car got stuck on Lenton Lane Bridge. This bridge has pretty significant signage warning motorists not to follow trams but it seems that during the morning of 28th October one motorist didn’t notice this and ended up getting their vehicle stuck on the bridge. With the car having to be removed there was no NET service between Meadows Way West and University Boulevard with ticket acceptance in place on local buses.

Manx Electric Railway Tunnel Car 5 enters the paintshop

With the reduced operating season coming to a conclusion on the Manx Electric Railway (last services for 2020 will run on Sunday 1st November) attention is now starting to turn towards 2021 which will (let’s hope!) be a far better year for all concerned and will see more trams needed for the daily service than has been seen over the past few months. One of the first motors to start getting ready for next year is Tunnel Car 5 which has recently entered the paintshop for a repaint.

Teenager taken to hospital after being hit by tram in Manchester

A 15 year old boy was taken to hospital with a leg injury after he was hit by a tram in Manchester City Centre. The incident happened on Corporation Street (on 2CC) at around 2200 on Saturday 24th October with the Police appealing for witnesses as part of their investigation into what happened. The collision affected Metrolink services running via 2CC while the emergency services dealt with it.

EATM awarded £50,000 from Culture Recovery Fund

The East Anglia Transport Museum in Carlton Colville is celebrating after they have been awarded a grant of £50,000 from the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund. The money will go towards some vital expenditure projects which were shelved earlier in the year as well as some future developments at the museum.

In Pictures: An update on the Birmingham Westside extension

It is likely to be the next tramway extension which opens in the UK and work on the second phase of the Birmingham Westside line is continuing with a view to trams starting running in 2021. The latest part of the West Midlands Metro expansion will see the line extended from the current Library terminus through to Hagley Road in Edgbaston with additional stops also provided at Brindleyplace and Five Ways. Dan Noon took a recent look at the latest progress on the construction.

A new home sought for the last remaining Carlisle tram

The future of the last known remaining Carlisle tram is in doubt with its owners the Workington Transport Trust being told they will have to leave its home of 15 years by 23rd November. The Trust have owned the tram since 2005 when they saved it after it failed to seel at auction and since then it has been located in Carlisle Railway Station undercroft but this space is now required for work taking place at the station meaning the tram needs to find a new home within the next few weeks.

In Pictures: Llandudno 7 commemorates the 75th anniversary of VE Day

2020 has been a disappointing year for the Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Tramway Society with all events they were due to attend having been cancelled (their last remaining ray of hope that the Llandudno Christmas Parade may take place have now been dashed with this too no longer happening in 2020). But despite this they were determined to show their support for the sacrifices made by the armed forces 75 years ago – a time when the Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Electric Railway was still running – and for this a spontaneous photo opportunity was achieved at the shed where no. 7 lives.

Track from Brierley Hill line donated to Severn Valley Railway

Track removed as part of work to prepare the route of the new West Midlands Metro extension between Wednesbury and Brierley Hill has been donated to the Severn Valley Railway to help them with their annual track replacement programme. More than a mile of disused track has been donated having been removed as part of the initial stages of preparing the trackbed for the Metro extension.

In Pictures: Good progress continues to be made on Trams to Newhaven project

2023 may seem a long way off but even though it will be the best part of three years before we can enjoy a ride by tram to Newhaven good progress continues to be made on the construction – no more so than around Ocean Terminal which was the first area handed back to the Infrastructure and Systems Contractor (SFN) and it is hoped that the first tracks for the extension may be laid here during November.

New under 16s smartcard launched by Nexus

A new and easy way to pay for travel on the Tyne and Wear Metro by the under 16s has been launched by Nexus. The Junior blue smartcard can be bought and topped up online meaning passengers won’t have to carry cash or use ticket machines when travelling.
