In Pictures: Poppies carried on Blackpool’s heritage trams

We’ve seen poppies being carried on modern trams but it has been far rarer for heritage trams to be seen so adorned but that has changed for 2020 with some of Blackpool’s heritage trams spotted with the iconic red poppy. This includes the Fylde Transport Trust’s popular Balloon 715 which received poppies on the centre of the end bumpers ahead of lockdown.

Car and tram collide on Bilston Road

West Midlands Metro services were disrupted early on Thursday 5th November after a car and tram collided on Bilston Road close to the ring road island between The Royal and Wolverhampton St George’s. An investigation is underway into the incident but at the present time it is not known the circumstances surrounding the collision. Photos of the incident show a fairly dramatic scene with the car wedged between the tram and a post with severe damage to its front and the tram having scrape marks along its side. The driver of the car was treated at the scene but did not require attendance at hospital and a further person also received attention from Paramedics. The collision happened at approximately 0720 with services able to resume around half an hour later.

Another change of service for Supertram

Sometimes it gets increasingly difficult to keep up with changes in service on UK tramway systems with probably the tramway with most changes being Stagecoach Supertram – and they’re at it again. It was only a few days ago we reported that the conventional tramway network would be returning to a later finish but before that could even be implemented its all change again!

Luas Engineering Works: 7th & 8th November

Another weekend, another set of engineering works on Luas! This time work is affecting the Red line over the weekend of 7th and 8th November with the work taking place at Steeven’s Lane near Heuston. As a result no trams will run between Blackhorse and Heuston with replacement buses in between and Connolly will not be served.

In Pictures: Poppies in Edinburgh

As we’ve seen over the past week or so various tramways across the UK have started to display poppies on their trams as a mark of respect ahead of Remembrance Sunday and the latest to be featured on this website is Edinburgh Trams. As in Blackpool the poppies are carried within the cabs located to one side at the bottom, sharing the space with the face mask reminder.

TfL agree £1.8 billion funding package with DfT

The threat to services across the Transport for London network has been averted following the announcement of an £1.8 billion funding agreement. It was widely reported that without this new funding package services may have to be cut on the trams, rail and bus networks and this new cash injection will help TfL maintain current service levels for the next few months.

Stop by Stop Nottingham Express Transit: Clifton South line – Queens Walk

In this new photo series we take a look at the all important stops on UK tram systems starting off in Nottingham. During this series we won’t be just looking at the stop as with many modern system the stops are of a fairly uniform style and it would soon get very boring just having pictures of the stops (although we will be seeing some of that just not exclusively); we also won’t be showing you a trailing crossover here, leading crossing there. That’s what the series isn’t but what will we be featuring? Its will be fairly simple series where we see trams at, or close to, the stops – in other words its yet another excuse to show more photos of trams! The first system we take a trip to is Nottingham Express Transit and we have split the network into four sections (so we can break each system up a bit as this series continues). For the next few weeks we will be concentrating on the line to Clifton South, a line which has the distinct advantage that you can walk alongside the track all the way once it had dropped down from the viaduct over the top of Nottingham Railway Station. In this first instalment we take a look at Queens Walk.

In Pictures: Latest update from Wilko’s demolition

In the latest instalment of our update on the demolition of the old Wilko’s store on Talbot Road in Blackpool we see the excellent progress that continues to be made on its removal as at Friday 30th October. Almost two months into the demolition over half of the structure has now been raised to the ground. Once the building is completely removed attention can then be turned towards preparing the site for the tram terminus and hotel which are both due to be completed by 2022. Another revised timetable for Supertram

Following swiftly after the announcement that a revised timetable would be running on the Blackpool Tramway after the start of the latest England wide lockdown, it has now been confirmed that Stagecoach Supertram will also be introduced on Stagecoach Supertram. There are two dates where timetables will change with a reduced tram-train service having started on Wednesday 4th November while the rest of the network will actually see extra trams running.

In Pictures: Poppies appear in Sheffield

Following on from the photos we’ve shown recently of poppies on trams in Blackpool, we can now feature Stagecoach Supertram’s own way to remember those who died in the line of duty. As with Blackpool poppies are being added to the trams with the difference being that they are externally affixed to the trams on one of the wing mirrors at each end.

Blackpool Tramway to reduce service again

Having recently successfully argued that they ran an essential service and been awarded additional government funding to keep services running, the Blackpool Tramway has announced a further reduction to the timetable as from Sunday 8th November. With England back under lockdown restrictions from 5th November and the illuminations being suspended its felt that a lower frequency service will suffice until further notice (and there probably isn’t much argument against that!).

In Pictures: Blackpool Flexity2 012 returns to service

For some time in Blackpool a number of the Flexity2 trams have been out of service with none of 004, 007 and 012 having been noted in use for several months and for 007 it has been over 12 months since it last ran. But this list can be reduced to two again now as 012 has recently returned to action.

Supertram services delayed after van blocks the tracks

Stagecoach Supertram services through Hillsborough were suspended for around an hour on the evening of Friday 30th October after a van was found blocking the tracks. It was reported locally that the Police thought the handbrake on the van had failed which caused it to roll onto the tracks at Langsett Road at approximately 1700. The van was removed around an hour later with services then reformed.

Trams in Video: Crich Tramway Village – London Event 2015

In this edition of “Trams in Video” we are heading to the Crich Tramway Village once more to take a look at some footage from June 2015. Filmed during the London Event on 13th and 14th June of that year we see London County Council 106 in service (which had just returned to service following overhaul at this time) and it is joined by fellow London trams London United Tramways 159, MET 331 and London Transport 1622. Glasgow 1068 is also in service. On top of this there are visiting buses and a visiting trolleybus too!

Lockdown returns to England – heritage trams suspended again

It was announced late on Saturday 31st October that England will once again be going into a national lockdown in an attempt to supress the spread of the Coronavirus. This means that as from Thursday 5th November – and until Wednesday 2nd December – there will further restrictions put into place including the closure of non-essential shops and the hospitality sector. Most significantly for this website it will mean that no heritage trams will be able to run during this period.
