Crich to open longer hours as season comes to an end

The last main week of the season at Crich in any normal year is one of the highlights of the year with the popular Starlight event taking place complete with special lighting effects and trams running after dark. Now, 2020 is anything but a normal year but even though it isn’t possible for the usual Starlight event to happen it has been announced that for three days at the end of October they will be opening until 1830.

Extra funding announced for Edinburgh Trams (and Glasgow Subway too!)

Edinburgh Trams will be sharing an additional £4 million worth of funding with the Glasgow Subway as the latest package is announced by Transport Scotland. The previous £9 million package ran out at the end of September and this new funding is due to cover both systems until the end of 2020 – although the Subway have said they are disappointed with the amount which will still a significant deficit by the of the financial year.

New transport projects being developed in West Midlands to transform transport in the region

£2.4 million is to be invested in the West Midlands by West Midlands 5G Limited (WMG5) to seven UK based consortiums to support the development of new products and services with the aim of improving transport. One of these projects is connected to trams to allow a safer service to operate.

Work starts to remove Weymouth Harbour Tramway tracks

In Pictures: Wilko continues to be demolished

Good progress continues to be made on the demolition of the old Wilko store at the junction of Talbot Road and Dickson Road in Blackpool. Of course, the land which will be freed up by this demolition will enable not only a new hotel to be built but also the construction of a terminus for the tramway extension from Talbot Square. The work on removing the building is due to continue until the end of the year. Tony Armitage provides us with these images from 7th and 10th October.

West Midlands Metro celebrate Light Rail Awards nominations

The West Midlands Metro are celebrating after confirmation they have been nominated for a number of categories in the Global Light Rail Awards – with the winners to be announced on 11th November. Amongst the categories they have received nominations in is the Operator of the Year category, currently held by Keolis Amey Docklands.

Seaton Tramway receive £435,100 from government funding package

The Seaton Tramway has been awarded £435,100 from the government backed Culture Recover Fund following the release of the first round of funding of this £1.57 billion fund. The money will go towards wages, major overhauls such as track and tram maintenance and the creation of new offers and opportunities with world class partners and exhibitions.

Luas Engineering Works: 17th & 18th October

Trams in Video: Berlin Trams 150th Anniversary – June 2015

Today’s video offering heads back to June 2015 with footage taken during the 150th Anniversary of Berlin Trams. BVG (Berlin’s transport authority) organised a display of historic and modern trams at Lichtenberg Depot and workshops on 27th and 28th June and this was followed by a tram parade on 28th June from Lichtenberg to Berlin City Centre. Both events feature in this video.

Standard 143’s defective motor to be repaired

One of the biggest talking points of 2019 was the high-profile failure of Blackpool Standard 143 on the night of its launch in September. Now over 12 months later and Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours have confirmed that the defective motor which caused the failure is to be repaired with a view for the tram to return to service – after a full period of testing.

Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Electric Railway 7 to star on TV!

As with so many heritage organisations, 2020 has been a challenging year for the Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Tramway Society with their usual fundraising channels having been removed as events around North Wales have been cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. But despite this there has been one ray of sunshine – film crews from S4C have been to visit the tram for a future episode of Welsh language series “Cynefin”.
