Summer Hill stables are put on protected register

The future of Douglas’s historic Summer Hill stables is now fully secure with the new that the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture have agreed to put the building onto the protected register; the Isle of Man’s equivalent of listed building status. The continued use of the stables for their original purpose had been confirmed earlier this year when the Department of Infrastructure completed their purchase from Douglas Borough Council but this latest news is the icing on the cake for the future with any threats to the structure hopefully now extinguished.

Crich spend Lottery money on paint, a door and more

As announced recently, Crich Tramway Village have received an £84,800 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to enable a project dubbed ‘Exploring the historic landscape of Crich Tramway Village’ to go ahead. The first phase of work is now underway at Wakebridge, which is focussing on the old lead mining display and the worm toilet (sometimes its best not to ask!).

Supertram staff set to strike over pay offer

Drivers and conductors on Stagecoach Supertram have voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action over the pay rise offered to them for the next two years. More than 9 in 10 of those from the Unite union who voted were in favour of the action and now both sides are to sit down together again to try and avert the obvious disruption this will cause to travellers on the network.

Consultation and workshops help to shape Newhaven extension

Back in March and April a consultation exercise took place as part of the project to extended the Edinburgh Trams line from York Place to Newhaven via Leith Walk. A number of themes came out of this consultation and now as the project team continues to include interested parties a series of workshops are being held to further refine the plans before a final decision is made on whether to press ahead with the planned extension – likely this autumn.

New fares for a new era in the West Midlands

From Sunday 24th June Midland Metro will be no more with the newly named West Midlands Metro coming into being as part of the new in-house operating contract for Transport for West Midlands. As well as an all new brand – the first details of which can be summised from the first publicity released – there will also be a new fares structure, including Metro only day tickets bringing the travel of a day exclusively on the trams down.

In Pictures: Spring Bank Holiday in Blackpool

The latest running of the intensive Gold heritage tram timetable in Blackpool took place over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend. As we reported previously the weekend was greeted with more good weather and included the first running of Boat 600 to Fleetwood in 2018 following completion of repairs which had kept it out of action for much of the year. Of course with six trams in service each day there was much more to see as shown in this pictorial from Glyn Hill.

In Pictures: 3103’s advert for Hits Radio Manchester

Last week we reported on the latest vinyl wrap in Manchester on 3103 for Hits Radio Manchester and now we bring you an image of the new advert. Using a psychedelic mix of colours and full contravision on all passenger windows this is the first advert to be carried on 3103 but is the second for this particular radio station who advertised on 3095 under their previous name of Key 103 FM. Problems continue with vandalism on Rochdale line

Services on the Oldham and Rochdale line were temporarily suspended on Thursday 14th June after at least three trams were targeted by local youths throwing stones causing windows to be smashed. The attacks started at around 1830 between Hollinwood and Failsworth with one person having to be treated for having glass in the eye.

In Pictures: Glasgow 1245 restoration update

Glasgow Coronation Car 1245 is still the major focus of attention for the Summerlee Transport Group at the Museum of Scottish Industrial Life with a good amount of progress having been made on the restoration of the tram since we last had an update in November 2017. Some of this progress has been with publicity but the small and dedicated group of volunteers have also been continuing with various aspects of bringing the tram back to the rails.

In Pictures: Volk’s Electric Railway 6 out on test

The next car to return to service on the Volk’s Electric Railway looks set to be no. 6 which is now undergoing final test running before it being commissioned for public use once again. As we reported recently 6 has been in the workshops requiring a little bit of mechanical attention to complete its overhaul which was mainly undertaken at Alan Keef Ltd. It is anticipated that as long as no issues are found in these tests it will soon be free to travel on the line along Brighton seafront with passengers once more. Once 6 is back attention will then presumably turn to getting 10 ready for service ahead of the busy summer season.
