Two for one travel on Metrolink this weekend – and kids go free too!

Adults can travel two for the price of one whilst children can travel for free on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th November on Manchester Metrolink with a special voucher downloaded off the Metrolink website (http://www.metrolink.co.uk/christmas/default.aspx). The publicity suggests that it is an ideal way to help you celebrate Christmas but we here at British Trams Online think it is far to be thinking of that celebration so you can just use it to travel anywhere on the network instead! To take advantage of this offer all you have to do is follow the link above and download the voucher. Season ticket holders can also gain from the offer as by downloading the voucher another adult and up to three children can travel for free. A number of retail offers are also available for this weekend and more details of these can also be found at http://www.metrolink.co.uk/christmas/default.aspx.

In Pictures: Rochdale line Metrolink testing

Further testing has been taking place this week on the Rochdale extension of the Oldham and Rochdale lines with M5000s being seen stabled at Milnrow stop between their overnight sessions. 3057 has been a regular performer on these tests and has been joined
by both 3053 and 3053 with trams noted in situ both at the end of October and this past week. It is currently planned that trams will make it to Rochdale Railway Station in service sometime in the early part of 2013, although no exact dates have yet been given and it is believed there will be a phased opening with the section to Shaw and Crompton being the first to open.

Metrolink T68 name – now you see, now you don’t!

The name on Metrolink T68 1024 has turned out to be a short lived one as it has already had it removed and is now running nameless. As you may remember the vehicle was named JEFF JARDINE on Friday 9th November to mark the retirement of a member of staff who had been with Metrolink for over 20 years but the name has now been removed and the tram operated in service like this on Tuesday 20th November.

Update on Cambridge Horse Car 7 – it’s from Bradford!

Back in August we featured some photos of Cambridge Horse Car 7 which is the next tram restoration project being undertaken at the Ipswich Transport Museum following the completion of Ipswich 33. At the time initial rubbing down of the tram body had confirmed that it was indeed car 7 but not a great deal more was known but in the intervening three months the team working on the tram have discovered a fair amount more – including the fact that before operating in Cambridge the tram was used in Bradford!

For the first time ever Santa Trams are to run on the Manx Electric Railway with Santa setting up a grotto at Laxey on two weekends in December. Isle of Man Railways have run Santa specials on the Steam Railway in the past and have now decided to extend that to the Manx Electric Railway to allow passengers to enjoy the winter scenery in anticipation of meeting the main man himself.

Manchester Metrolink Engineering Works: 1st & 2nd December 2012

There will be no trams operating on the Eccles or MediaCityUK branches of Manchester Metrolink over the weekend of Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd December due to engineering works. Railcoach restoration resumes

A slightly surprising development at the Lancastrian Transport Trust’s leased premises at the Brinwell Road Industrial Estate on the outskirts at Blackpool, involves English Electric Railcoach 279. This tram has been undergoing restoration to near-original appearance since 2009 having ran with flat ends as an Ex-Towing car for many years, but work had stalled as the LTT’s priorities changed. However, work has recently been restarted on the project.

The value of an art deco Brush car

The fate of preserved Blackpool Brush Railcoach 298 has been a subject of great discontent amongst many tram enthusiasts for quite some time. A meeting held by the Tramway Museum Society earlier this year included some discussion on the future of this tram, but unfortunately the outcome was not as positive as many would have liked it to be. It would seem that the day when 298 will carry passengers again is a long way off, despite a huge amount of work already being undertaken on it.

Crich play area to become a tram depot?

It has been well documented that the Tramway Museum Society, based at Crich Tramway Village, are desperately short of covered accomodation in which to house its growing collection of priceless vintage trams. Both the museum site at Crich, and their off-site store at Clay Cross are full to bursting point following the acquisition of several redundant Blackpool trams, and the failure of an appeal to fund the construction of a new depot in which to house the new arrivals.

Another successful season ends at Seaton

The Seaton Tramway is celebrating the conclusion of another successful season with the final timetabled passenger journey operating on Sunday 4th November. Tram 9 had the honour of operating this last service – as indeed it had operated the first journey back in February when weekend operations had commenced – at the end of a fairly busy week as a result of the Halloween Tram of Terror event which had been in operation up to Halloween. The tramway will next see paying passengers for the Santa Specials in the lead up to Christmas but in the meantime the Workshops are busy with activity whilst general maintenance out on the line is also taking place.

Salvation for Centenary car 646?

A further development in the strange tale of Blackpool Centenary car 646 has taken place since we reported last week, that parts of the tram were being offered for sale on an internet auction site. The sale of the first item, a windscreen wiper blade, has now been abandoned due to the commencement of discussions regarding the possibility of a new home for the complete tram.

Winter at Beamish

The winter season at Beamish Museum has now commenced, bringing it with reduced opening hours and preperations for Christmas. However, any concerns that the level of interest at the museum would reduce are unfounded; most of the usual attractions remain open for business as normal at weekends, and the tram service continues largely unaffected.

New name for Metrolink T68 1024

Manchester Metrolink T68 1024 has been named Jeff Jardine, to mark the retirement of  one of Metrolink’s long serving controllers. Jeff had been with Metrolink since January 1992 – before the line had opened to the public – and has been in the Control Room for many years with the naming being carried out as a surprise on his last day at work. This is the first naming of a T68 since the Vans sponsorship two years ago.
