Scenic T68s: Manchester Metrolink 1022

In the final part of our mini Scenic T68 series we feature a view of one of those vehicles to run on that last day: 1022.

Services were unaffected by the snow with no major delays reported during the snowfall. Photos provided by Ian Buck.

Working in a winter wonderland at Heaton Park

So far in 2015, no passenger services have operated on Manchester’s Heaton Park Tramway, but behind the scenes an incredible amount of work has been taking place. Although the main focus remains the ongoing restoration of Hull 96, other projects have seen work on the tramway infrastructure as well as two other members of the resident tram fleet.

More snow woe for Supertram

Of all the tram systems in the UK Stagecoach Supertram suffers most when snow falls with its large amount of street running and the height of parts of the route and the past few days has once again seen some disruption to services, although as is always the case a lot of the delays have been caused by broken down or abandoned cars blocking the tracks. This latest batch of snow started to fall late on Wednesday 28th January and that evening saw the first disruption which continued for much of the following day.

In Pictures: Manchester Metrolink in the snow

Sheffield was not the only UK tramway to be hit by snow this week with Manchester Metrolink also seeing a slight covering but this caused very few problems for the service. Steve Kemp went out with his camera to take a selection of images at Sale Water Park alongside the M60 showing the M5000s making light work of the snow.

Winter work at Crich Tramway Village

Despite being closed to paying customers since early November, there is still plenty going on at Crich Tramway Village this winter. The major project has been the renewal of the interlaced track passing beneath the Bowes Lyon Bridge, which is now largely complete. This has included some much-needed drainage works, as well as cleaning of the stone setts before they are restored in situ. However, many other jobs are being carried out around the museum site, involving both vehicles and buildings.

Car collides with tram in Manchester City Centre

It seems you can’t go too long on Manchester Metrolink without another incident involving a car with the latest such incident occurring on Tuesday 27th January. This time a cab managed to drive into the path of a double unit (led by 3022) on Mosley Street at the junction with Nicholas Street – by no means the first time a car has come into contract with a tram at this location.

Blackpool 671 is back at Rigby Road (again!)

There was an unexpected delivery at Blackpool’s Rigby Road tram depot on the morning of Monday 26th January, when Twin car motor 671 returned home following a lengthy period of outside storage at Marton. 671 was the last of the historic Blackpool trams formerly owned by the Lancastrian Transport Trust to be rescued and moved to a new/old home, and this move really does mark the end of this controversial organisation’s involvement in the tramcar preservation movement.
