In Pictures: The realigned Metrolink track at Derker

Back in July 2024, Manchester Metrolink services beyond Oldham Mumps were suspended after land movement around Derker which affected both the track and overhead poles at this location. After intensive rectification work, trams were able to resume from 19th August and this article takes a look at some of the work completed.

The line was closed between 10th July and 19th August with engineers having to move around 200 metres of track back into position using more than 100 tonnes of ballast as well as moving the overhead poles. If you travel through the area now it is evident where this took place.

More work will be needed here at some point in the next 12 to 24 months to make the line more resilient.

This view of the inbound track after leaving Shaw was taken from behind the cab of an inbound tram and shows the area which suffered significant movement due to ground movement towards the track on the right hand side of the photograph. The temporary realignment of what was a long sweeping curve is clearly evident.

Another view of the same area taken from behind the cab of an outbound tram after leaving Derker. Again the realigned track is visible along the evidence of the 20 mph restriction needed to ensure safe operation. Further works to make permanent repairs will be necessary and will probably take place next year. (Both Photographs by Steve Hyde, 25th October 2024)
