Well-behaved pets look set to be welcomed on board Luas services following a recent consultation by the National Transport Authority. The results of this consultation have now been released with the next step set to be the NTA working with transport operators to update their byelaws.
Currently only assistance dogs are allowed on trams (and many other transport operators services across Ireland) but the results of the consultation saw strong support for allowing pets to travel on public transport. Respondents highlighted the benefits of being able to travel with pets for veterinary appointments, family visits, and other everyday journeys.
There were also some concerns raised relating to allergies, passenger comfort, hygiene, safety, and enforcement.
NTA have considered all responses carefully and are proposing additional owner responsibilities and operational guidance to ensure the policy can be implemented in a safe, practical and balanced way.
NTA will work alongside transport operators to draft updates to relevant byelaws and conditions of carriage. This will apply across TFI funded services including Luas, bus and rail.
Further details of when the changes will be introduced will be given at a later date.
