We had a bit of mystery for today’s Picture in Time as we head to the Manx Electric Railway back in the 1960s for an image of a tram as we weren’t sure what the tram was but we have now had confirmation that it is indeed Tunnel Car 7!

In Pictures: Latest Tram-Train construction work

Within the next four months or so it is currently planned that the UK’s inaugural Tram-Train service between Sheffield and Rotherham will be up and running (September is set as the much delayed opening date but whether this is met remains to be seen). However, before this will be able to happen the final stages of construction will need to be completed and as this latest pictorial update from Glyn Hill shows recent progress has been slow to say the least.

Halle 902 moves to Blackpool

On Tuesday 22nd May, Halle 902 made the journey by road from Crich Tramway Village to Blackpool. As reported previously, the tram is to be stored at the Rigby Road depot as part of an arrangement with its owners, who require some additional depot space at Crich which has been freed up by the departure of 902.

New body cameras to aid fight against antisocial behaviour on Metrolink

In recent months the amount of antisocial behaviour across the Manchester Metrolink network seems to have increased with numerous incidents of smashed windows and assaults reported in the local media. To try and combat these problems it has been announced that all Customer Services Representatives on board the trams will now carry body-worn video cameras to both deter potential troublemakers and also to be used to assist criminal investigations.

Birkenhead museum opening delayed

The planned re-opening of the Wirral Transport Museum at Birkenhead’s Taylor Street has unfortunately had to be delayed. Despite volunteers working countless hours over the past four weeks, it has proved to be impossible to have everything ready for the proposed opening date of 26th May, and a new date of Saturday 21st July has been set.

In Pictures: Classic Transport Gathering at Crich

Sunday 20th May was another chance to see the trams of Crich running alongside visiting cars as part of the Classic Transport Gathering. A creditable five trams were provided for service on the day and there was also the added excitement of Halle 902 being shunted by Blackpool 762 in preparation for its move to Blackpool (where it will meet up with the other Jubilee Car of course also stored at Rigby Road!)

In Pictures: Yet another C R Smith advert appears in Edinburgh

Just when you thought it was safe to say that is that with C R Smith adverts in Edinburgh then another one turns up! The initial contract signed by the company was for 18 trams to receive location based adverts but in the last few days the 19th advert for the company has appeared with 256 the latest tram to go over to advertising the window firm. However, unlike the other 18 this advert does not contain any specific locations but is a much more generic ad.

Poor four weeks for Metrolink

Although the reliability of Manchester Metrolink continues to be on the up the latest figures recently released have shown that punctuality between 1st and 28th April was considerably down from the previous period. There doesn’t seem to be any particular reason for this downturn with only a few major disruptions reported but KeolisAmey Metrolink have said that they will be focusing on improving punctuality in the next period.

Fallen tree causes delays on Tramlink

Passengers wanting to travel on the Beckenham Junction and Elmers End lines of London Tramlink were disappointed on Monday 14th May after a fallen tree between Arena and Harrington Road caused services to be suspended. The first reports of the tree were shortly before 1400 with no trams able to run between Arena and Harrington Road on the Beckenham Junction line. As time went on the affected area increased and at its peak there were no trams between Addiscombe and Elmers End or Avenue Road. With the tree removed a normal service started to run again around 1700.

In Pictures: Blackpool 630’s farewell tour

On Saturday 19th May, Blackpool Brush Railcoach 630 operated a special ‘farewell’ tour of the entire Blackpool system, its last such outing before it returns to its active retirement home at Crich Tramway Village. On this gloriously sunny day, 630 was joined by fellow TMS-owned car Box 40 and here are some images from the occasion!

Boat 600 – back where it belongs!

For the first time this year, a Boat car was employed on the Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours service on Saturday 19th May. With 227 still undergoing extensive restoration work and 230 stored awaiting workshop attention, 600 has been flying the flag as the sole operational Boat car for over a year, but it was also sidelined during the spring with electrical faults.

Nurse of the Year announced

Nottingham Express Transit Citadis 220 now knows whose name will be applied to it for the next 12 months after the Nottingham Nurse and Midwife of the Year was announced at a ceremony in the city. Luisa Avanzado, a staff nurse on the Berman 2 Ward at City Hospital, won the award following an online poll. 220 – which currently carries the name Christina O’Loughlin after the 2017 winner of the accolade – will be renamed in due course.

More funding for Crich for new permanent exhibition
