Still Standing! Clapton Depot, London

Another trip to London for this edition of “Still Standing!” as we take a look at the old Clapton Depot.

Initially known as Hackney Depot it was opened by the North Metropolitan Tramways Company in 1883. It was then taken over by the LCC on 1st April 1906 before London Transport took control on 1st July 1933. It originally housed horse trams (up to 17th May 1907) before electric trams moved in (until 9th December 1940) and then trolleybuses (from 11th June 1939 to 14th April 1959). It has been a bus garage ever since. The name was changed to Clapton c1950 to avoid confusion with the Hackney Well Street bus garage but it very much in Hackney being adjacent to Hackney Central station.
