New South Shields Interchange opens

Tyne and Wear Metro services are now serving South Shields once again following the opening of the new interchange at the start of services on Sunday 4th August. Metro cars 4018 and 4076 were given the honour of operating the very first services from the £21 million interchange which will bring bus and Metro services under one roof for the first time in the town and is all part of the wider £100m South Shields 365 regeneration masterplan.

Standard 143 runs under own power for first time!

As we continue to move towards the official launch of Blackpool Standard 143 a major milestone has been reached in its restoration – the tram has moved under its own power for the first time! The heritage workshops have continued to be a hive of activity in recent weeks with Balloon 707 getting closer to a return to the rails as well.

Shudehill and Cornbrook stops to close for improvement works

This summer will see two busy Manchester Metrolink stops close temporarily to allow for works in improving passenger facilities to take place. The works will take place at both Shudehill and Cornbrook over the summer which will necessitate the closure of the stops (Shudehill for much longer than Cornbrook) but trams will still continue to run past the stops.

In Pictures: Progress continues on new bus depot at Beamish

The Remaking Beamish project is continuing at a pace with the first 1950s building having opened at the start of the summer (the Welfare Hall). From a transport point of view the first major project will be the new bus depot which is being built adjacent to the current tram/bus depot at Foulbridge. Once completed later this year it will allow the expanded bus collection to be housed undercover whilst also giving extra space in the tram depot for all the trams at Beamish. There will also be a viewing area so that visitors can see the ongoing maintenance of the buses. An exact date of opening hasn’t yet been announced but it is expected to be later in 2019.

In Pictures: And still the trackwork goes on in Sheffield

We are still in area 4 of 2019’s rail replacement programme in Sheffield but this work is now drawing to a conclusion which will allow almost two full weeks of a normal service running across the Supertram network! Before then though work has now moved onto the short section of the Blue route to Malin Bridge. In this latest pictorial work is seen underway on the inbound line between the junctions with Ball Road and Beechwood Road. Stuart Cooke with the images.

In Pictures: Trailers x3 return to service on the MER

Probably the biggest highlight of the recent Manx Heritage Transport Festival this year – well, at least on the Manx Electric Railway anyway – was the return to service of not one, not two but three trailers! 37, 49 and 54 all officially returned to action on Wednesday 24th July – the first day of the festival.

Whilst in Edinburgh the mobile signal has lessened in recent days with an advert for EE being removed on 275 it is the opposite case in Manchester where 3096 has just been unveiled in a new ad for Vodafone – the fifth M5000 to be sponsored by this company.

In Preview: Crich heads back to the 1940s again

Revised service for Supertram on 4th August

Sunday 4th August should have seen the full resumption of services on the Blue and Yellow routes but Stagecoach Supertram have announced that with extra work required at Holme Lane the route to Malin Bridge will remain closed but Yellow route services will resume to Middlewood.

Delays for Metrolink after tram failure

There were delays for Manchester Metrolink during the afternoon rush hour on Friday 26th July after a tram failed at Deansgate-Castlefield. The problem was down to an issue with the “pantograph connecting to the overhead line” which meant no trams were able to run through Deansgate-Castlefield whilst this was fixed. All trams from Eccles, East Didsbury, Manchester Airport and Altrincham were terminated at Cornbrook during the disruption. The tram was stationary for approximately 30 minutes after 1800 but delays continued whilst the service was reformed.

In Pictures: Lowestoft 14 sees the light as Amsterdam 474’s truck heads off

Friday 26th July saw the next stage of Amsterdam 474’s truck overhaul with the extracted truck being moved out of the depot and sent off for repair. In order to allow the truck to be taken away the elusive Lowestoft 14 was towed out of the depot making a very rare outside appearance as it continues its own restoration. Work has been continuing on 14’s extensive restoration with recent concentration being on the upper deck decorative metalwork.

Edinburgh Trams records busiest ever Sunday

Over 38,000 passenger journeys were recorded on Edinburgh Trams on Sunday 28th July making it the busiest Sunday yet since the system opened in May 2014. Passenger numbers were boosted by a sell-out football match at BT Murrayfield between Liverpool and Napoli with more than 66,000 tickets sold for the event.

In Pictures: More Supertram rail replacement images

In Pictures: The Blue revolution continues on West Midlands Metro

There are now four all blue trams on the West Midlands Metro with 23 the latest of the Urbos3 trams to receive the new livery vinyls. A tram had been spotted in the depot shed at Wednesbury last week but at that time it wasn’t possible to identify which tram it was but on Saturday 27th July it became obvious when 23 was seen in service sporting the new look.

In Pictures: Edinburgh Trams 275 scores a try with new Scottish Rugby advert

The EE 5G advert on Edinburgh Trams 275 hasn’t lasted long with a new design having already been applied on the tram. This time around it is for Scottish Rugby with the very familiar layout of, yes you’ve guessed it!, full height adverts on sections three and five of the tram and then above window ads on the remaining sections.
