In Pictures: Douglas Bay Horse Tramway construction update

Its been a while since we’ve included an update on the relaying of the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway but we change all that today with a photographic look at what has been happening on Douglas Prom recently. As we’ve reported over the past few months the already controversial project to redevelop Douglas Prom has run into more trouble with the Department of Infrastructure admitting it is unlikely to be completed (or at least as far as the revised plan had said it would be) by March 2021 and it remains unclear whether horse trams will resume operation at the start of whatever tourist season there may be next year.

Details revealed for Stockport 5’s return

Having spent the past seven years out of service undergoing attention in the workshops, Stockport 5 is set to return to service at the Heaton Park Tramway on Friday 4th December. It was 2013 the last time that 5 ran in service and although it has travelled back to its home town for a day a couple of years ago it has spent most of that time undergoing workshop attention to bring it back to use – and now that day is upon us!

Still Standing! Carlinghow Tram Depot, Batley

Its another old tram depot which is “Still Standing!” today. This time we are heading to Batley in Yorkshire where the original basic structure is still in place and it does once again house vehicles although they are quite some way away from the trams which once stood in the building.

Enabling works for Metro Eastside extension agreed with HS2

Stadler to work in partnership with Newcastle University on new Metro fleet

When Stadler were announced as the winning bid to construct the new fleet of trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro there was controversy in the local area as Hitachi – who have a factory in the region – had been shortlisted but were unsuccessful with complaints about not securing local jobs. It has now been confirmed that Stadler are to work in partnership with Newcastle University to “promote shared learning and innovation” as part of their “commitment to North East England”.

New safety measure in place on Metrolink to reassure passengers

With the England wide lockdown coming to an end from Wednesday 2nd December, transport bosses in Manchester are seeking to reassure any potential passengers on Metrolink that it will be safe to travel with a number of safety measures in place. Although Manchester will be in tier 3 when the tiers are reintroduced there is still an expectation that passenger numbers will increase and this publicity campaign is seeking to make sure they know the measures which are being taken.

New South Shields Learning Centre welcomes first intake of drivers

The £8.4 million Nexus Learning Centre at South Shields has welcomed its first intake of drivers which has now been opened after the completion of construction work over the summer. The facility has been built on the site of the old South Shields Metro station and allows Nexus to bring a wide range of rail infrastructure and operations training under one roof.

Trams in Video: Electric 50 at Crich – September 2014

Some six years ago now the Crich Tramway Village celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first electric trams running at the museum with a two day special event held at the museum on 13th and 14th September. The highlight of the event was the operation of 25 electric passenger trams which included Newcastle 114 visiting from Beamish plus Blackpool & Fleetwood Box 40 and Blackpool Balloon 711 from Blackpool. Footage of the Cavalcades on each day is also included.

Enlarged Park and Ride sites on the way for Metrolink’s Bury line

Two Park and Ride sites on the Manchester Metrolink Bury line are set to be increased following the approval of plans by Bury Council. The two sites at Radcliffe and Whitefield will see a total of 234 new parking spaces provided in what is described as a boost to sustainable transport.

In Pictures: Wilko’s nearly gone – but still there!

As we head back to Blackpool this week’s update shows more of the old Wilko’s building has been removed leaving just a small part of the structure still standing which will surely be removed within the next few weeks leaving the site free for construction of the tram terminus and hotel to begin in 2021.

Extensions on the agenda for Metrolink?

Since the Trafford Park line opened in March there have been no active extensions of Manchester Metrolink in development but that could all change in the near future with the confirmation of funding for a feasibility study to link Bolton to the network while over in Middleton councillors have said brining Metrolink to the town is a priority.
