Delays for NET after tram derails following collision

There was significant disruption for services on the Nottingham Express Transit system on Thursday 19th September after a tram was derailed after being hit by a lorry. The collision happened at 1045 and services weren’t able to resume until just before 1500.

Open trams out this weekend both sides of Atlantic

There could be the chance to enjoy rides of single deck open trams this weekend – but you’d probably be hard pressed to enjoy all of them! This weekend (21st and 22nd September) sees the annual Muni Heritage Weekend in San Francisco and there should be two Blackpool Boat cars in operation whilst on Sunday 21st September the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway are hoping to use Toastrack 21 in service.

English light rail journeys increase again

In what is a mainly positive story, the latest Department for Transport figures have shown that passenger journeys being undertaken on English tram and light rail systems are continuing to increase and whilst they have still not yet got to pre-pandemic levels they are starting to edge closer. But while it is mainly positive there are some outliers which have seen numbers fall over the past 12 months – including London Trams and Blackpool Tramway.

West Midlands Metro service change: 25th September to 2nd October

Plans unveiled for tramway in Cardiff

Transport for Wales and Cardiff Council have revealed plans for a new tramway linking Cardiff Central and Cardiff Bay with a 6 week public consultation now underway. This would be the first phase of Cardiff Crossrail and would be the first rail link between Cardiff Central and Cardiff Bay. It will significantly improve the railway network between the city centre and Cardiff Bay providing benefits to the wider city and region.

Seaton Tramway volunteer driver lends voice to BBC drama “Nightsleeper”

One of Seaton Tramway’s volunteer drivers, Matthew Streeton, can currently be heard in the new BBC One drama series “Nightsleeper”. Matthew is well known across the rail network in the UK as after having worked in the rail industry he became the voice at around 200 stations delivering automated platform announcements between London and Sussex.

In Pictures: Electric Tram Weekend at Crich

Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September saw the annual enthusiast event take place at the Crich Tramway Village – this year titled Electric Tram Weekend. With 2024 marking the 60th anniversary of electric tram operation at the museum there was a focus on celebrating that with static trams on display whilst there was also a look forward to the future with recent restoration projects having come to an end and the trams entering service.

Appeal launched over West Midlands Metro tram conductor assault

British Transport Police have launched an appeal for information after a tram conductor on the West Midlands Metro was assaulted. The assault happened on 20th July just before 2300 and saw the conductor repeatedly punched in the face as the tram was travelling between Brindleyplace and Five Ways.

Teen completes his Metro ultra marathon

Charles McManus, 18 from North Shields, has successfully completed his ultra marathon which saw him visit all 60 stations on the Tyne and Wear Metro. Starting at 0300 from South Hylton he completed the 77 mile route just after 2030 when he arrived at Monument Station in central Newcastle.

In Pictures: Bluebird launched into service

Friday 13th September saw the latest tram to have had a major restoration at the Crich Tramway Village enter service with London County Council 1 (aka Bluebird) officially launched at a special event for supporters, members and other invited guests. The stunningly restored tram entered service after a short ceremony on the depot fan and then proceeded to run in service for the assembled guests.

In Pictures: West Midlands Metro Dudley extension construction update

FOI request reveals over 100 collisions on Edinburgh Trams since opening

A recent Freedom of Information (FOI) request made of Edinburgh Trams has revealed that since the system opened in May 2014 there have been 112 collisions with other road vehicles, four with cyclists and seven incidents involving pedestrians, leading to one death.
