North Lanarkshire Council look for a Tram & Historic Vehicles Technician

For many years the only operational tramway in Scotland could be found at the Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life, but this short heritage line has been out of action since September 2022 after an electrical fault was suffered at the museum. This has since been fixed but the trams have still remained stationary as North Lanarkshire Council – who own the museum – have been looking to fill a vacancy on the technical side. Hopefully, this will soon be filled though as they have recently posted a vacancy for a Tram and Historic Vehicles Technician.

The role – which is permanent and would be a 35 hour week – pays between £29,180 and £31,737 per year. Not only would the successful applicant have responsibility for the trams and tramway, but also with all museums in North Lanarkshire Council.

It will involve a wide variety of activities that relate to the safe operation of the museum tramway and historic engineering exhibits. A knowledge of working with a range of historic vehicles is advantageous and the successful applicant should also have experience in maintenance and project planning.

Applications are open for this role now with the deadline set for 10th January 2025. Applications can be made online here.

It is hoped that if this role is filled that 2025 may finally see the return of trams in operation at Summerlee after both 2023 and 2024 saw none running at what is the only operating heritage tramway in Scotland. It is home to four trams: Glasgow 1017, Dusseldorf 392, Lanarkshire 53 and the under restoration Glasgow 1245. Both 53 and 1017 last ran in 2022 although its thought that 392 hasn’t run since 2020. 1245 has never run at the museum with it last being used during its period at the East Anglia Transport Museum.
