A major £7.9 million renewal project of Regent Tyne and Wear Metro station is set to be completed by Kier following the award of a contract to complete the work.
As part of the contract, Kier will create a safer, more reliable, accessible and future-ready transport hub that is set to transform the travelling experience for Metro passengers.
Kier have previously worked on the upgrade and restoration work at Whitley Bay station which was completed in 2025 and will now use their experience in that project towards making Regent – in Gosforth – a much more pleasant place to catch the Metro.
The scope of works will include:
- Creation of a new retail unit
- Removal of existing old bus canopy, which covers the road through the interchange
- Modernising mechanical and electrical systems
- Providing civils and architectural elements
- Creating a brighter, more inviting space for passengers, to enhance the customer experience
- Updating wayfinding for improved accessibility
Kier will also be engaging with local schools and community groups throughout the project.
Paul Welford, Major Projects Director at Nexus, said: “We are delighted to have appointed KIER to carry out this major project on behalf of Nexus. Having recently working together on the Whitley Bay Metro Station restoration, we’re looking forward to getting the Regent Centre refurbishment underway.
“Regent Centre Interchange plays a vital role within Newcastle in connecting people to where they need to be. As a strategic hub on both the Metro and bus network, it’s essential that Regent Centre sets the standard for modern, high‑quality and accessible public transport and what it looks like in our region. This refurbishment is about enhancing an interchange that supports multi‑modal travel and makes it easier for passengers to access the station, and begin region‑wide journeys.
“The investment will deliver refurbished Metro platforms and a brighter, more welcoming station concourse to improve crowd flow, complementing our new Metro fleet and additional security via new gatelines at this station.
“Further improvements include removing the old metal roof canopy, improved signage and enhancing welfare facilities for Nexus employees.”
Mandy Duncan, Managing Director for Rail and Aviation at Kier Infrastructure, said: “We’re delighted to secure this further rail contract in Newcastle upon Tyne, and we look forward to working in partnership with Nexus to create a modern transport interchange for rail passengers.
“By drawing on Kier’s 360 approach, our team will work seamlessly across every stage of the project lifecycle, bringing together the expertise and skills needed to deliver this important upgrade.”
Construction work is due to start this summer.
