Edinburgh Trams ToTo celebrates 1st anniversary

Launching on 19th May 2025, the Tap-on, Tap-off (known as ToTo) way of paying for travel on Edinburgh Trams has now reached a significant milestone – its first anniversary.

ToTo was Scotland’s first multi-modal, multi-operator Account-Based Ticketing solution and has provided a modern solution for people who use their contactless card or device for travel.

In the first year there have been just over 2.4 million customer journeys and now accounts for more than 72% of adult single tickets sold on platforms.

ToTo also won Best Customer Initiative at the Global Light Rail Awards in October 2025 for its use of existing infrastructure and customer-focused integration with existing technology.

Sarah Singh, Tram Director at Edinburgh Trams, said: “To have reached the milestone of one year of Tap On, Tap Off is a great achievement for us as a business. Many of the team worked hard behind the scenes for years before TOTO went live and for us to be celebrating one year of its implementation to the public feels like a momentous occasion.

“Thank you to everyone who made TOTO possible, and of course, the people of Edinburgh who have welcomed TOTO with open arms and adopted it as one of their main payment methods. TOTO’s success shows how customers are embracing smarter and more flexible travel options.”
