West Midlands Metro have confirmed that the full implementation of “Buy Before You Board” on their services will start on 13th September 2026. Ahead of this date they are reminding passengers of the need to buy tickets either from machines at all stops or the app.
From this date it will not be possible to buy a ticket on board any tram with the next week or so seeing Metro colleagues out across the network to offer support and guidance to anyone unsure of how to get their tickets going forward.
Michael Reading-Skilton, Metro’s Head of Commercial and Customer Experience, said: “First and foremost, our teams will aim to help customers get used to the new Buy Before You Board system. When it comes into effect next month, it will no longer be possible to buy a ticket on the tram and customers without a valid ticket or pass could be liable for a Penalty Fare.
“We know the vast majority of customers expect everyone to pay their way, so penalty fares will start to be issued to anyone travelling without a valid ticket or pass.
“As we count down to the launch of the new arrangements, I would encourage customers to start getting into the habit of buying before boarding now, rather than risking getting caught out later.”
Additional ticket machines have been installed at tram stops across the network and the MyMetro app can also be used to purchase a wide range of value-for-money tickets.
Anyone found to be travelling without a valid ticket or pass after 13th September will be issued a £100 penalty fare. Revenue Officers will be introduced in order to ensure that everyone travelling is doing so having paid their way.
