Volunteers wanted to help restore Carlisle’s last tram

The Workington Transport Heritage Trust (WTHT) are the proud owners of the lower deck of the last surviving Carlisle tram and have made an appeal for more volunteers to help with its restoration. Their big aim is that it would become a local tourist attraction but before that can happen they need extra help to bring the tram back to a condition more akin to a tramcar.

Whitley Bay Metro station footbridge reopens

The historic footbridge at the Grade II listed Whitley Bay Tyne and Wear Metro station has been reopened to the public following major restoration work. It was used for the first time since its painstaking restoration on Monday 8th June 2026 and is now in regular use once again.

Another delay for West Midlands Metro to Dudley

In the news that will probably come as a surprise to absolutely no-one, the opening of the first stage of the West Midlands Metro Black Country line extension is set to be delayed. The end of August 2026 date will now not be met with no new date set although Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) officials are saying it should be by the end of the year.

Consultation opens on DLR Thamesmead extension

A new public consultation is now underway on Transport for London’s plans to extend the Docklands Light Railway from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead via Beckton Riverside. This latest consultation now has more detailed information, including station designs, construction plans and environmental impacts, and will be open until Thursday 16th July.

In Pictures: Supertram platforms start to get identified

Its one of the quirks of many tram systems in the UK in that platforms aren’t really identified, except to say northbound/southbound or “trams to x”. Of course that’s not a hard and fast rule and there are some notable exceptions, including (and not limited to!) Victoria on Metrolink, Wimbledon on London Trams whilst the West Midlands Metro also identifies its platforms with numbers. South Yorkshire Supertram hadn’t previously numbered their platforms (except at Rotherham Central) But that is now changing on where they are starting to letter platforms at various stops.
