In Pictures: A new season underway on the Great Orme Tramway

As is usual late March saw the start of another season on the Great Orme Tramway with trams now due to run daily until late October. Trams run each day between 1000 and 1800 (until 1700 during October) with regular services running on both the lower and upper sections during these times. A standard return ticket is available for £8.10 (adults) and £5.60 (children) and can be purchased from the ticket office at each end of the line. In this short pictorial article we take a look at the four trams around Halfway Station with thanks to David Stringer for the images.

All the Stations do Luas as they head to Ireland

Back in 2017 Vicki Pipe and Geoff Marshall embarked on a quest to visit all 2,563 railway stations in Great Britain completing not only a series of videos on You Tube but also a best selling book to show their mammoth effort. Move forward to 2019 as they are now in Ireland attempting to do the same plus the addition of covering the entire Luas network and its 67 tramstops.

Next stage of Metro extension works to start in June

As work on the Birmingham Westside extension of the West Midlands Metro continues at a pace it has been confirmed that the Five Ways underpass will be closed to all traffic from Monday 3rd June until 2021 – the year that services to Edgbaston are due to commence. This is all part of the second phase of this route with phase one between Grand Central and Centenary Square due to open at the end of this year.

Boy injured after being hit by tram in Nottingham

A nine year old boy was taken to hospital after he was hit by a tram at Eskdale Drive on Sunday 7th April. The incident happened at approximately 1550 with the boy receiving treatment on scene by the ambulance service before he was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre for further treatment. Trams were suspended between Bramcote Lane and Toton Lane until around 1700 when a full service resumed.

Promotional ticket prices extended until May 2020 on Tram-Train

When the Tram-Train service between Cathedral and Rotherham Parkgate started operating in October 2018 it was revealed that the tram-only dayrider tickets would be available for a promotional period only. This was initially expected be until this spring but it has now been confirmed that this period has been extended until 2nd May 2020 – meaning you’ve still got the best part of 13 months to enjoy these lower prices to Rotherham!

Police seek witnesses to tram conductor attack in Nottingham

Nottinghamshire Police are wanting to talk to a boy in connection with an assault on a tram conductor on 9th March. News of the assault has only just been released by the Police with a picture of the youth released to aid their investigations (available here). The assault happened at the Nottingham Trent University stop on 9th March at approximately 1400 and the Police are asking any witnesses to ring 101 and quota incident 457 of 9th March 2019.

Volk’s Electric Railway late running dates announced

With the Volk’s Electric Railway back running for another season dates have now been announced for the popular Late Running evenings operated by members of the Volk’s Electric Railway Association. There will be seven evenings with extra trains running after the service usually ends giving a rare opportunity to ride on the historic line on what it is hoped will be a pleasant evening on the Sussex coast!

In Pictures: Great North Steam Fair kicks off

Thursday 11th April saw the first day of Beamish’s Great North Steam Fair. With plenty of vintage vehicles in action the day also saw a four tram service in operation – Blackpool & Fleetwood 40 and Manchester 765 were in service as expected and were joined by Sunderland 16 and Blackpool 31. The event continues over the next three days with the final day being Sunday 14th April.

More dates set for Tramlink strikes

A further three 24 hour strikes have been called by ASLEF over the continuing dispute over pay on London Tramlink. The latest dates announced are due to be on 1st, 9th and 23rd May and follow on from a previous strike on 28th March.

Man in critical condition after being hit by tram in Manchester

A 77 year old man – named locally as Ray Boddington a well known busker and member of the Piccadilly Rats – is in a serious condition in hospital after being hit by a tram in Manchester City Centre. He was hit by a tram heading towards Victoria at the junction of High Street and Church Street shortly after departure from Market Street at approximately 1850 on Wednesday 10th April. He suffered serious head injuries and is described as being in a serious condition. Greater Manchester Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision.

Tram-Train service suspended after fault grounds Citylink fleet

The Tram-Train pilot service between Cathedral and Rotherham Parkgate for several hours on Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th April after the discovery of a fault on one of the Citylink vehicles which meant it was necessary to undertake checks by the manufacturer on the remaining tram-trains. Services were initially suspended during the evening of Tuesday 9th April and remained suspended initially on Wednesday 10th April before a two tram service resumed in the late morning. It is planned a full service will resume from the start of Thursday 11th April.

The school Easter Holidays are upon us and it is very nearly time for the biggest transport event of the year at Beamish – the Great North Steam Fair. With the museum busier than recently on a weekday, Tuesday 9th April 2019 saw a four tram service in operation; Sunderland 16 and Blackpool 31 were running on the clockwise circuit with Newcastle 114 and Oporto 196 operating anti-clockwise.

Edinburgh Trams announce 2019/20 nominated charity

The tramway has previously supported other charities including MS Therapy Centre Lothian who were recently presented with £12,500 following a number of events.
