Metro services resume to South Hylton – but at reduced frequency

After a week of disruption Tyne and Wear Metro services are now running through to South Hylton again after Network Rail engineers repaired some of the overhead line damage. However, a reduced frequency will be running for the next “few weeks” as extra parts are required to allow a full repair to be completed.

Details announced for next area of Supertram rail replacement

We are now fast approaching Area 2 of Stagecoach Supertram’s rail replacement programme for 2020 with the work around White Lane due to get underway from Saturday 6th June. This means that there will be further changes to the temporary timetables running on Supertram from this date, although as was the case in the current phase of works no specific replacement bus service will be put on for passengers.

Metro confirms £7.6 million government funding

At the weekend we reported on the £29 million worth of funding for light rail in England and it has now been confirmed by Nexus that the Tyne and Wear Metro has been awarded £7.6 million of this financial support to back the increase in services already seen on the network.

Tyne and Wear Metro services hit by overhead line damage

Services to South Hylton on the Tyne and Wear Metro have been suspended since Friday 22nd May after a freight train brought the overhead wires down in the Sunderland area. Extensive damage was caused with Network Rail engineers on site seeking to repair this damage to allow a full service to resume.

New Metro trains hit delays

The current global Coronavirus pandemic is already causing issues to transport across the world as fewer people travel with various restrictions in place and it is likely that this will continue to be an issue for some time as people’s travelling habits take a long time to resume back to pre-lockdown levels – if, indeed, they ever do. Another likely affect for transport is that various construction projects will fall behind schedule, which will include the building of new vehicles. Connected to this the Newcastle Chronicle are reporting that the fairly recently announced new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro are already behind schedule.
