Gallery 878: Around the World in Trams Special - Sintra Tram 2005-2018

This collection features images of the Sintra Tram in Portugal on several visits in 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2018. The Sintra Tram (Electrico de Sintra) runs between Sintra and the resort town of Praia das Macas 13km to the west. Most of the trams which operate the service were built in the 1930s by Brill although they are supplemented by similar locally built cars. The service runs Friday to Sunday, with an extended summer timetable, with the first service in the summer at 0920 and then roughly hourly. The journey takes around 45 minutes from end to end and it can get very busy leading to long waits for intending passengers. The route is now run by the local council and the line underwent major repairs in 2011 after a 1km stretch of overhead wire was stolen. It remains operational in 2020 with 8 stops along the 13km route which follows the N375 down from the hills of Sintra and then the N247 to the beach at Praia de Macas. Photographer: David Mee
Photographs taken in May 2005, May 2006, September 2009 and October 2018.
