In Pictures: Portsmouth 84 at Milestones Museum, Basingstoke

This pictorial article goes to the Milestones Museum in Basingstoke, Hampshire which is home to the sole surviving Portsmouth Corporation Tramways tram – no. 84. With Milestones having opened back in December 2000, 84 has been part of the collection throughout that period and remains an integral part of a visit to the museum.

Milestones Museum is completely undercover and has been set out as a number of street scenes to show Hampshire in the Victorian era and the 1930s. There is also some transport interest on top of no. 84 with vehicles from local manufacturers Thornycroft and Taskers. There are also buses and a trolleybus which are part of the collection at Milestones.

No. 84 dates from 1880 when it was built as a horse car for the North Metropolitan Tramways Co. Ltd in London. It was converted to an electric tram in 1903 and was withdrawn from passenger service for conversion to a railgrinder. It remained in use for this purpose until the closure of Portsmouth’s tram system in 1936.
