UKTram and industry partners meet to discuss opportunities in South Yorkshire

UKTram joined with industry partners for a collaborative event hosted by the Railway Industry Association (RIA) in Sheffield which explored light rail opportunities across South Yorkshire and beyond. The event was held in partnership with Hitachi Rail and the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN) with the focus on how innovation and collaboration can support future development of light rail systems.

Work continues on Beamish tramway infrastructure

As Beamish comes into its main season (its now open every single day until 23rd October 2026 between 1000 and 1700) work on upgrading, improving and maintaining the tramway infrastructure has been continuing. This has seen overnight work with an outside contractor having been brought in to attend to the overhead.

VolkerRail use new track maintenance solution developed by Sika in London Trams renewal

Rail replacement works which VolkerRail undertook on the London Trams network earlier this year used a new track maintenance solution developed by Sika. The work – which took place during a 15-day blockade – saw a key crossover and 500 metres of embedded rail replaced and it was used as a trial of new solution.

Fleetwood trackworks to be paused over Easter weekend

Services on the Blackpool Tramway will run through to Fleetwood Ferry over the Easter weekend, with the trackworks which started in mid-March being paused for four days. They will resume again from Tuesday 7th April with a further week of work expected.

In Pictures: Trackworks underway in Sheffield

As we reported a few days ago, the first major trackworks of 2026 got underway on the South Yorkshire Supertram network from Saturday 28th March. The 16-day project will see no trams running between Sheffield Station and Gleadless Townend to allow rail replacement at Manor Top, on City Road, Park Grange Road and Hollinsend. Magna Tram-Train station to open 9th April

It seems to have been a long-time coming, but it has now been confirmed that the new tram-train station at Magna will open on Thursday 9th April 2026 – the first additional stop to be added to the network since the start of tram-train services in 2018.

Major programme of Metrolink improvement works continues in 2026

Get ready – the 2026 major programme of improvement works on the Manchester Metrolink network is set to get underway over the Easter weekend with work taking place on the Altrincham line and at Trafford Bar and Deansgate-Castlefield. This is all part of the continued £150m worth of investment which aims to make the network more reliable, resilient and safe for years to come.

In Pictures: Blackpool 018 back out as it celebrates Blackpool Tramway’s award win

As we’ve reported already this year, the Blackpool Tramway has been the latest system in the UK to suffer from tram shortages which required the introduction of a temporary timetable (which is still in place). Maintenance of the trams has been continuing during the quieter winter months and things took a step forward in late March with 018 returning to action – complete with new vinyls to celebrate the Tramway Operator of the Year award they won in 2025.

Undercover police deployed in special Metro operation

A special policing operation which saw officers in plain clothes deployed on the Tyne and Wear Metro network to catch crime and anti-social behaviour has taken place. The so-called “trojan horse” op followed a similar format to Northumbria Police’s “Trojan” bus initiative and was part of the continued aim to keep the system safe and secure.

Supertram Engineering Works underway – and a 12-minute service will return after their completion!

School holidays and expected better weather/more daylight hours can only mean one thing – it’s the start of another year of improvement works on the South Yorkshire Supertram network! The first set of works started earlier today (Saturday 28th March) and will see service changes until the end of Sunday 12th April – but the good news is that once these are finished Supertram will be able to return to their 12-minute frequency timetable.

Long-serving Metro driver retires after 40 years

One of the longest-serving drivers on the Tyne and Wear Metro has retired after 40 years on the network. Brian Bulmer, aged 67 from Hebburn, started driving in 1986 and has described the train cab as the “best office in the world”.
