In Pictures: Trackworks underway in Sheffield

As we reported a few days ago, the first major trackworks of 2026 got underway on the South Yorkshire Supertram network from Saturday 28th March. The 16-day project will see no trams running between Sheffield Station and Gleadless Townend to allow rail replacement at Manor Top, on City Road, Park Grange Road and Hollinsend. In this article we take a look at the temporary operations at Sheffield Station as well as the start of the trackwork. Stuart Cooke with the images.

Trams on the Blue route (no Purple route trams are running for the duration) are still displaying Halfway on their destination displays, with the addition of “VIA REPLACEMENT BUS SERVICE”. The bus is starting from Fitzalan Square with anyone wishing to travel to stops as far as Gleadless Townend advised to change there.

103 has arrived at the normal outbound platform where it now waits to reverse.

Trams then depart from the same platform and use the crossover to gain the correct track. 103 demonstrates the move.

The inbound curve from Ridgeway Road into City Road at Manor Top is the first section of track to be replaced.

And then further along City Road and the outbound track is also being replaced. (All Photographs by Stuart Cooke, 28th March 2026)
