Trams form part of plan to maximise opportunities from the arrival of HS2 in the East Midlands

Midlands Connect have recently released a report following a study into how the East Midlands can maximise opportunities presented by the arrival of HS2 in the region – and as part of their plan trams/light rail feature both in the short-term and longer-term plans with Nottingham Express Transit extensions said to be important to help the area improve connections.

Trams in Video: Amsterdam Tram Museum – June 2016

Edinburgh Trams Inquiry back in the headlines

5th June 2014. That is the date that the Scottish Government announced that there would be “swift and thorough” investigation into the major problems experienced in the construction of the original Edinburgh Trams line rom the Airport to York Place. Now six years later and the Inquiry is back in the headlines as questions continue to be asked when the result of the investigation are known with it having been one of the lengthiest and most expensive Inquiries in Scotland.

NET services suspended for 7 hours after communications fault

Thursday 4th June saw major disruption for anyone wishing to travel on Nottingham Express Transit with the complete network suspended for around seven hours after a communications fault was reported. The first reports of the service suspension came just before 1200 when a statement from NET said “all trams will be terminated at Wilkinson Street”. The fault was not resolved until around 1900 – some seven hours after the first reports. During this period any prospective passengers – a much lower number than possible of course – were advised that tickets were being accepted on NCT buses.

Maintenance work resumes on the MER

With all services on the Manx Electric Railway having been suspended since the end of Thursday 19th March there was a long period of complete silence on the line but now with a slight relaxation in restrictions on the Isle of Man, some engineering works have been able to resume – albeit with full social distancing in place for Isle of Man Railways staff and contractors.

Major NET rail replacement works to get underway from 20th June

Nottingham Express Transit services through the City Centre are to be disrupted for a month from Saturday 20th June to allow for major rail replacement works on the section between Old Market Square and Royal Centre – track which has been seeing trams run over it frequently since NET opened 16 years ago. The work will take slightly longer than originally planned to allow the contractors to use full social distancing guidelines.

Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours receive Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services

UK tram and light rail news hasn’t exactly been filled with good news stories over the past few months as we continue to report on more COVID-19 service changes and museum closures but just occasionally a pleasing news story comes through, and here is one such article! Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours have become one of only 230 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service this year – the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK.
