3128 enters service on Metrolink

With Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours currently running daily tours during the summer school holidays there are usually one or two heritage trams out on Blackpool Prom each day. They may normally run without any issue transporting their paying customers either on a Promenade Tour to Little Bispham or a Coastal Tour to Fleetwood occasionally there are faults such as we see in the attached photos when Boat 600 had a spot of trolley trouble.

Trams to Newhaven project warns of concrete shortages

In their fortnightly project update the Trams to Newhaven team have warned that there may have to be a change to the current plan for construction as a result of a nationwide concrete shortage. Despite this issue they have confirmed that they still expect the project to be completed both on time and within budget.

Hop on, hop off heritage tours to return in Blackpool for Anniversary Weekend

It’s a weekend which is penciled in to the diaries of many a Blackpool tram enthusiast at the start of the year and its back for 2021! The Anniversary Weekend – which will see the tramway celebrate 136 years – will be taking place on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September 2021 and although at a smaller scale than events up to 2019 should still have plenty of tram action to keep you entertained!

New track starts to be laid in Birmingham City Centre

Over the first couple of weeks of the project to relay tracks in Birmingham City Centre – along with installing the junction between the current city centre line and the forthcoming Birmingham Eastside extension – our updates had shown the removal of track and the old track bed. But now in this latest update we see some positive progress with the first new track down and the track bed further along the line also being put down. Mark Cufflin with the pictures.

New adverts on Metrolink and Tramlink

There have been another couple of vinyl adverts applied on trams in the UK – with Manchester Metrolink seeing another design added to 3064 while a rarer event is on London Tramlink where 2531 has received the first new advert there since January 2015.

Eccles line to reopen from Monday 16th August

Services will resume to MediaCityUK and Eccles from Monday 16th August after the completion of the delayed rail replacement works which have taken place over the past four weeks. The line had originally been due to reopen from Sunday 1st August but following the discovery of degraded concrete the closure had to be extended to allow this work to be completed.

In Pictures: Blackpool span wires continue to appear

In another update from Blackpool we head onto Talbot Road again as we see more span wires being installed as well as a feeder cable. With the ongoing work taking place overnight they have now reached the junction with Abingdon Street continuing their way up Talbot Road towards the terminus on the old Wilko’s site.

Half of Glasgow 488 arrives in Suffolk

The project to restore Glasgow 488 so it can operate at the East Anglia Transport Museum in Carlton Colville has reached a momentous milestone as the lower deck has left Wales and arrived at a storage location in Suffolk. There it joins the truck which is under overhaul for when the tram becomes one once more.

Berlin 223 006-4 to be displayed to commemorate 60th anniversary of the Berlin Wall

On 13th August 1961 residents of Berlin awoke to find that their city had been split into two. Roads had been torn up, railway lines blocked and barbed wire fencing erected along the 97 mile border between the western sector and the German Democratic Republic and the 27 miles that divided East and West Berlin. Just four days later and the barbed wire had been replaced by a concrete wall. The infamous Berlin Wall was born and would remain in situ for almost 30 years.

In Pictures: Blackpool wiring work starts to move along Talbot Road

Since the overhead installation for the Blackpool Tramway extension began last month it has been taking place on the section where the new line connects with the old Prom line. This has seen overhead put in place on the south and north curves along with various span wires and frogs in preparation for trams both pantograph and trolley fitted. But now work is moving along Talbot Road with the first span wires now in place up to the new Premier Inn (on the site of the old Yates’ Wine Lodge). We take a look at those new wires – as well as a quick look at Wilko’s – in this latest pictorial update.

Overhead fault at Basford on NET causes service disruption

This article has been updated on Thursday 12th August.

There has been major disruption on Nottingham Express Transit during Wednesday 11th August after an overhead line fault was discovered close to Basford tramstop on the line to Hucknall and Phoenix Park. The fault was first reported just before 1100 and at the time of writing has not been repaired.
