In Pictures: Good progress on Birmingham City Centre trackworks

Its now been seven weeks since West Midlands Metro services through Birmingham City Centre were suspended to allow for the installation for the new delta junction linking the current line to the Eastside extension as well as the track relay along Corporation Street and into Stephenson Street where the Grand Central stop is located. During this time excellent progress has been made and all the pre-cast concrete units are now in place with work now underway on the welding of the track and the pouring of the concrete.

Tram Day is back at Crich – this Saturday!

It seems to have been a long time (two years in fact!) but Saturday 18th September finally sees the return of Tram Day at Crich with up to 14 passenger trams due to be in service during the day plus the usual photo line-ups and Works Cars in action on the mainline as well. And if all that isn’t enough for you passengers will also be able to get on and off trams at Glory Mine all day!

In Pictures: Points failure at Cathedral leads to Tram-Train and Purple route changes in Sheffield

Sheffield Station/Sheffield Hallam University became a temporary terminus for trams on the Tram-Train and Purple routes on Sunday 12th September after a points failure at Cathedral. Services were affected for around five hours from mid-afternoon while the fault was repaired.

When trams returned to operation at Beamish on Saturday 4th September it was expected that the rest of the month they would be restricted to weekend only operation – but on Monday 13th September that assumption was proved wrong as passenger services resumed seven days a week operation!

Strike dates confirmed for Manchester Metrolink

Manchester Metrolink services look set for severe disruption on four dates in September and October after members of Unite the Union voted in favour of walking out in a dispute over a new pay offer for drivers. Described as “pitiful” by the Union the offer was made after months of negotiations and is said to equate to a real terms pay decrease.

In Pictures: August Bank Holiday views from Crich

In this pictorial update we head to the Crich Tramway Vuillage on Bank Holiday Monday, 30th August. This was the day when the track fault was discovered preventing trams from travelling any further north than just beyond Victoria Park (a fault which has now been fixed and after a couple of weeks with short running saw full services resume on Saturday 11th September)  but these images come before then. We see trams at Glory Mine and also take a quick look at Wakebridge where the recently restored Bradford Cabman’s shelter can be seen. Keith Chadbourne took the following photos.

Reliability and punctuality hit on NET

As with many transport systems in the UK the months of July and August were a challenging period for Nottingham Express Transit with high staff absenteeism (relating to Covid self-isolation) leading to a fall in reliability and punctuality. The latest report to the Greater Nottingham Light Rail Transit Advisory Committee has given more details of the problems experienced.

Confirmation of four more Metro trains ordered

Nexus have now confirmed the additional order of four trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro network to bring the total that Stadler are manufacturing for the network to 46. An initial order of 42 was announced last year and there was the option of an extra four, subject to receiving government funding for the Metro Flow project which now confirmed means its full steam ahead for a total of 46 trains to be built by Stadler in Switzerland for introduction in the northeast from 2023.

Track replacement works on Phoenix Park line to see weekend closure

There will be no trams running between Highbury Vale and Phoenix Park across the weekend of 25th and 26th September to allow for track replacement works to take place. Throughout the weekend trams from Clifton South will terminate at Bullwell with  dedicated bus replacement service in operation.
