In Pictures: Three full sized trams plus lots of models at Heaton Park!

Saturday 31st August saw a Model Tram exhibition at the Heaton Park Tramway with displays available for the public to view inside the museum building (Middleton Road tram depot). And of course it wasn’t just about small scale trams as outside the full sized versions were in operation – and it was a rare three tram service for visitors to enjoy!

80,000 passenger journeys to Blackpool North Station in first two months

Blackpool Council have confirmed that in the first two months of operation, the Blackpool North Railway Station extension of the tramway has seen over 80,000 journeys which have either started or ended at the newest terminus on the 139 year old tramway.

In Pictures: Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours Enhanced Weekend August Bank Holiday

The August Bank Holiday weekend saw the latest Enhanced Weekend take place in Blackpool with another hop-on, hop-off  heritage tram timetable in operation. This saw five trams run on each of the three days of the weekend, which included the first use of the Illuminated Frigate for this season just a few days ahead of its intensive period of use during the annual Illuminations. In Pictures: Trams passing on Holme Lane

With the single line platform at Malin Bridge its not often that you get the chance to see trams passing on the short branch from Hillsborough to Malin Bridge. But with the increased frequencies currently running on what is normally just the Blue route owing to the rail replacement works along Middlewood Road and diversion of Yellow route trams it has become a more regular occurrence.

Metrolink Special Purpose Vehicle to be sold in Sealed Bid Auction

KeolisAmey Metrolink have confirmed that the Special Purpose Vehicle, numbered 1027, which has been part of the Metrolink fleet since delivered new in 1991 is to be sold by way of a sealed bid auction. As first reported on these pages earlier in the summer following an article in the Branch Line Society magazine, the vehicle is surplus for requirements and KAM are now looking to dispose of it.

Big Heritage progress with plans for Wirral Transport Museum – and Tramway

It has been nine months since it was confirmed that Big Heritage had taken on the lease of the Wirral Transport Museum (a 28 year lease was signed) and that they remained committed to also returning trams to the short heritage tramway which runs from the museum at Taylor Street to the Woodside Ferry terminal. Since the statement confirming all that was released in November 2023 things had gone a little bit quiet but that has now changed with local press reporting on progress and further plans.

In Pictures: An update from Supertram’s rail replacement work

We take another trip to Sheffield as we view the latest progress on the rail replacement works taking place on the Supertram system. The final 2024 phase of work is taking place along Middlewood Road with old rails being removed and new rails put in their place to allow for the continued safe and reliable operation of the network. In Pictures: Balloon 718 on LRT specials – including a trip to Fleetwood

Over the summer the use of a B fleet Balloon on LRT specials (calling at the regular platforms and not the heritage stops) has not been that an uncommon sight. This has tended to be 718 but 700 did make at least one appearance on these runs, the majority of which have operated between Starr Gate and Tower. But on Friday 23rd August 718 was able to spread its wings a bit further as it operated a special all the way north to Fleetwood.
