In Pictures: Railgrinder visits Blackpool

In days gone by most tram systems across the system had their own fleet of works vehicles which could perform a variety of tasks, often whilst most people slept no idea what maintenance work was taking place. The modern tramway is much different than that and it is usually the case that specialist equipment has to be hired in to complete tasks. And recently the Blackpool Tramway has done just that with a railgrinder on hire.

Bluebird to be launched at Crich on Friday 13th September

As the 10 year restoration project comes to an end it has been confirmed that London County Council 1 – more commonly known as Bluebird – will be launched in an event for special guests and Tramway Museum Society (TMS) members at the Crich Tramway Village on Friday 13th September 2024. All being well it is then likely that Bluebird will run in public service for the first time since 1957 over the Electric 60 Tram Weekend on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September.

In Pictures: Illumination season underway in Blackpool once again

This year sees a revised pattern of Heritage Tram Tours Illumination tours with a reduced output due to run on selected days of the week but it won’t just be the public tours that see heritage trams out under the lights as its not uncommon to see Private Hires during the Illuminations as well.

Seaton Tramway August tram mileage revealed

The latest Seaton Tramway newsletter has given the mileage operated by the trams during August. The last details released for July caused a little bit of confusion as although said to be mileage it looked as if they were actually trips along the line (either that or there were very few journeys made!) but this time looking at the numbers we think they genuinely are mileage and not trips on the line!

In Pictures: Lowestoft 14 moved to West Depot at East Anglia Transport Museum

Over the past few weeks we’ve featured trams being moved around the East Anglia Transport Museum as restoration projects continue to progress. We first saw Lowestoft 14 out of the main depot to allow the top deck of Glasgow 488 to be moved there for the start of work on its restoration. 14 has now been moved up to the West Depot (the new structure on the recently acquired land) as we see in our first photos of it below from Tim Major.

Irish visit to Tyne and Wear Metro

Seaton Tramway announce return of 23!

23 is to make a return to the Seaton Tramway, it has been announced. Whilst not previously having operated at the tramway it did make an appearance there in 1995 for the 25th anniversary of the opening of the line and will now be back as from Saturday 14th September during the Model Tramway Exhibition taking place that weekend.

Progress continues on new Dudley Bus and Metro Interchange

A former supermarket has now been demolished as progress is made on the development of a new Bus and Metro interchange in Dudley. The large building and remaining bus shelters were stripped down and removed over the last three months which means the site is nearly completely clear which will then allow the construction phase to get underway.

Heaton Park Tramway announces closure until 2025

The Heaton Park Tramway season has come to a premature end after the announcement that they won’t be able to operate trams again until 2025. This early end to the season is immediate and does mean that the previously advertised Tramtastic! event (due to take place Sunday 8th September) is cancelled. The decision has been taken to allow the upgrade of equipment in the substation.

New City of Edinburgh Council Transport and Environment Convener appointed

Cllr Stephen Jenkinson has been appointed as the new Transport and Environment Convener on the City of Edinburgh Council. Cllr Jenkinson replaces Scott Arthur who became MP for Edinburgh South West at the recent UK general election.
