Brighton Bus Depot to hold open day

Saturday 25th July 2026 will see a free open day take place at Lewes Road Bus Depot in Brighton. Now you may think we’ve lost the plot by telling you this, but there is good reason as this is a former tram depot and it will be celebrating 125 years of transport use with this special open day.

Lewes Road Depot has featured in our Still Standing! series not once but twice and is one of a limited number of former tram depots which remain in transport use to this day. It originally opened on 25th November 1901 as the home of Brighton Corporation Tramways and remained in tram use up until 31st August 1939.

Following that it was converted for trolleybus use and then from 1960 it became the home of buses only – and has remained a bus depot ever since.

On Saturday 25th July 2026 current operators of the depot – Brighton & Hove Buses – will be opening the doors for free between 1000 and 1600.

Brighton Tram 53 Society will be attending with historical information and there will be a display of classic buses as well as some modern buses of Brighton & Hove Buses.

There will also be a shuttle bus service between Volk’s Electric Railway and Stanmer Park and Lewes Road Depot operated by classic buses and brand-new electric buses.
