The Dundee Museum of Transport opened in April 2014 and is currently located in a former abbatoir in Market Mews not far from the centre of the city. Work to expand the museum has been ongoing since although it is planned to be a temporary location as they have aspirations to move to the former Maryfield Tram Depot, although that needs considerable work to make it suitable. In this article we take a look at the current museum to see what it has to offer the tram enthusiast.
The museum has four halls which display a wide variety of transport items including two former Dundee Corporation buses. They also have former Dundee tram no. 24 which is the main focus of this article of course!
Dundee 24 was built by G F Milnes, Birkenhead in 1897 and was one of 10 to be transferred to the ownership of Dundee Corporation when they took control of the tramways in 1899. It didn’t last long under Corporation ownership though as it was withdrawn in 1900 and sold on for further use. The tram ended up in Perth where it was discovered in a garden, still in relatively good condition all things considered. It was recovered by the museum in January 2014 and the intention is to restore it to its original running condition.
