More Supertram rail replacement works to come

Disruption for passengers on Stagecoach Supertram is coming over the next two summers with the news that the rail replacement works – started in 2013 – are to be concluded as part of a £12.5 million project. South Yorkshire PTE have started the tendering process as they seek a contractor to complete the works.

New cycle lanes to be added in Edinburgh to make crossing tracks safer

The City of Edinburgh Council are to install a number of red surfaced cycle lanes at key points of Edinburgh’s tram network within the city centre in order to try and make it safer for cyclists when traversing the tram tracks. This is the first of a three-phase project to help all road users keep themselves and each other safe when negotiating the tram tracks.

Protestors cause Metrolink disruption

Manchester Metrolink services running through St Peter’s Square were disrupted on Sunday 1st October after protestors decided to sit and stand on the tracks during protests outside the Conservative Party Conference (which was taking place at Manchester Central and the Midland Hotel). Whilst the Police dealt with the protestors Metrolink services were suspended through the area with trams from out of the city being turned at Cornbrook, Deansgate-Castlefield and Exchange Square. Services were still able to run into Piccadilly. Once the protestors were moved – two women were arrested on suspicion of obstructing the highway with one man arrested on suspicion of assaulting a Police officer – tram services resumed through the area but delays were still experienced.

Man dies after being hit by tram at St Paul’s

A man has died after being hit by a tram at St Paul’s Midland Metro stop. The incident happened at approximately 0530 on Saturday 30th September with the Police treating the death as unexplained. Trams were only able to run between Winson Green Outer Circle and Priestfield until 1000 whilst Police enquiries took place before a full service – with delays – was resumed.

In Pictures: Work continues on Bilston Road

The work to replace both in and out bound tracks on Bilston Road between Priestfield and The Royal is continuing with the Midland Metro Alliance still stating that they are on schedule for the line to fully reopen by Christmas. The chance is also being taken to install the points for the forthcoming Wolverhampton City Centre extension in order to try and minimise disruption for Metro travellers in the future. Andy Walters has been out with his camera again and provides us with these latest images of recent progress.

Daytime heritage service cut back in Blackpool

Since the end of the summer school holidays, Blackpool’s daytime heritage service has only been operating at weekends. With effect from 30th September, this has been cut again, with a reduction in the number of hours that the heritage tours are running, with all morning journeys being axed for the rest of the peak season.

In Pictures: IKEA opens in Sheffield

Thursday 28th September saw the latest IKEA open in the UK with the new store opening adjacent to Carbrook Supertram stop. This is the second IKEA to have a tramstop directly serving it with Ampere Way on London Tramlink the other whilst there is also an IKEA close to Manchester Metrolink on the Ashton-under-Lyne line. Supertram are publicising how easy it is to get there by tram but also warning passengers that there are restrictions to just how much you can carry onto the tram!

In Pictures: Citylink trams used on Purple route

So far the Citylink trams used in service have been used as “service extras” with the odd round trip in between the standard service but on Monday 2nd October that changed with their first use on timetabled services. 399 205 and 399 207 were the chosen trams and they were used on the Purple service between Cathedral and Herdings Park.

In Pictures: 12th and 13th C R Smith vinyl ads applied

There are now 13 trams running in Edinburgh with the C R Smith advertising vinyls applied with the entry into service of 252 and 258 carrying their versions of the adverts. With 18 due to receive the special liveries this means that there are only a further five location combinations to come.

Event Review: Blackpool Anniversary Spectacular – Sunday 24th September

The second day of Blackpool’s now annual anniversary event followed a similar pattern to the first, with an intensive heritage tram service operating over the full length of the tramway, as well as heritage bus tours, workshop visits and non-operational trams on static display. However, Sunday was even more ambitious than Saturday with a grand total of fifteen heritage cars in service – virtually all of the currently operational fleet.

In Pictures: Seaton Terminus in its last week

For 22 years the Seaton Tramway has been running into a Victorian style terminus on the edges of Seaton Town Centre but over the last few years the whole area has undergone regeneration with a new Tesco superstore and Seaton Jurassic opening with a far more modern feel. As a result plans have been formulated to construct a new state of the art terminus facility for the tramway which has meant the Victorian terminus was closed after the last tram departed on Sunday 17th September. In this pictorial we take a look at a few trams at the terminus during that last week, taken by Tony Sullivan.

Funding secured for Curzon Midland Metro stop

The proposed Midland Metro stop at the Birmingham Curzon HS2 railway station has moved a step forward with the news that a £27.5 million funding package has been secured. This stop will integrate the proposed HS2 station into the city centre and improve connectivity to Digbeth.

RAIB report into door trap incident on DLR released

NET to operate revised service for Goose Fair

Event Review: Blackpool Anniversary Spectacular – Saturday 23rd September

Having quickly established itself as one of the premier tram events in the British Isles the Blackpool Tramway Anniversary Spectacular took place over the weekend of 23rd and 24th September (plus an afternoon of Brush Car action during the previous afternoon as already reported on). With 2017 seeing the 80th anniversary of the Brush Railcoaches they understandably took centre stage during the weekend including two loanee trams and one returning to service for first time since 2004. The following review looks at the first day of the event – Saturday 23rd September.
