Edinburgh Trams and IHF Driver Innovation Safety Challenge moves to pilot stage

As we reported earlier in the summer Edinburgh Trams are leading a Driver Innovation Safety Challenge (DISC) project along with IHF to help to monitor driver fatigue and it has now been announced that this project will be known as FOCUS+ and is now entering the pilot test stage in September.

Anti-social behaviour crackdown on Tyne & Wear Metro

Northumbria Police and Nexus have teamed up for a major anti-social behaviour crackdown on the Tyne and Wear Metro to both protect and educate passengers on the network. Operation Hermes took place over a two day period in late August with a range of tactics deployed including the use of archway knife detectors and wands, undercover work and outreach.

In Pictures: Cable Tramway artefacts discovered in Edinburgh

We’re used by now to finding historic artefacts underneath road surfaces across the UK and this includes when they start to construct new tram lines. That is the case in Edinburgh where work to extend the modern Edinburgh Trams system along Leith Walk has thrown up many historic items and this has included some remnants of the long-gone cable tramway system which once operated in the Scottish capital.

Trams in Video: Lisbon Trams – October 2016

In this vide we are back to Portugal and Lisbon for some more footage taken during October 2016. Included in this footage we see local youths hanging on and taking a free ride on the tramway. A worldwide phenomenon this is dangerous to say the least and throughout the UK warnings are given on how dangerous this is and we certainly don’t condone any actions shown in this video!

Wilkinson’s demolition set to start

Since work on the Blackpool North Railway Station tramway extension resumed at the start of June there hasn’t been a large amount of obvious progress as a great deal of preparation has been needed first. But as from Monday 7th September major signs of progress will be visible as the Wilkinson’s building will start to be demolished necessitating road closures in the local area.

As expected Sunday 30th August saw the opening of the new interchange at Ashton-under-Lyne. This new multi-million pound facility now provides a seamless interchange between Manchester Metrolink and local bus services with plenty of covered accommodation for passengers as they wait to continue their journeys. More rail replacement work coming for Supertram

Area 4 of the 2020 Supertram Rail Replacement works will get underway from Tuesday 15th September with the work this time being completed around Crystal Peaks necessitating service changes for the Blue route. The Purple route will also return to operation but on a revised timetable with the Yellow route and Tram-Train service unaffected by this work.

In Pictures: Birmingham Westside extension works continue

Work on further extending the West Midlands Metro to Hagley Road in Edgbaston have been continuing over the past few months with just a short break at the start of the lockdown restrictions in March. This extension will see trams continue beyond the temporary terminus at Library travelling via Broad Street and Five Ways to the new terminus at Hagley Road – the line is due to open in 2021. Dan Noon recently took a walk along the line from Library and this pictorial features some of the images showing how things looked at the end of August 2020.
