Full Metro running challenge completed by fundraiser

Paul McDougal has completed his epic challenge of running the route of the whole Tyne and Wear Metro network – with it taking him just 18 hours and 30 minutes to complete it. Paul, 35, lives in Vietnam now and returned home to the northeast to complete the challenge, all in aid of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACOA).

Market engagement started for DLR Thamesmead extension

It may not have been given the full go-ahead yet but in preparation for spades going into the ground Transport for London have started preliminary market engagement for the DLR extension to Thamesmead. This is the first step in finding out which suppliers would be interested in bidding for the construction contract when it is formally put out to tender.

A tram renaming in Nottingham as Vicky McClure dedicates tram to Our Dementia Choir

Nottingham Express Transit 224 has been renamed following a request from Vicky McClure. Originally named after the actress, best known for roles in Line of Duty and Trigger Point, she made the request to change the name after the choir she formed in 2018 which was agreed to by NET, who also named Our Dementia Choir their charity of the year in 2025.

In Pictures: Work underway at Wolverhampton St George’s (again)

The latest closure of the section of the West Midlands Metro into Wolverhampton St George’s is now underway with the last tram (for now) having served the stop on Friday 6th February 2026. According to the literature released on their website in connection with the closure this will allow signalling equipment to be replaced although as these photos from Andy Walters show it looks as if it will go beyond that.

NEETT hand over their trams to NELSAM

The days of the North Eastern Electrical Traction Trust (NEETT) being a player in tram preservation are over after it was confirmed that they have signed over the remaining trams in their ownership to the North East Land Sea and Air Museum (NELSAM). The change in ownership has already happened and whilst, for now, there won’t be any changes to their status, NELSAM have announced that they only intend to retain two of five trams with the remaining three to be disposed of.

City of Edinburgh Council reveal route for a third tram line

A new map released by the City of Edinburgh Council (as part of a “conceptual representation” of the future multimodal transport network in the city) has revealed plans for a third tram line which would use the South Suburban railway line as its basis and would also see the first use of tram-trains in the Scottish capital.

The Tyne and Wear Metro has played a supporting role in a new series of dramas made for the BBC. It was seen in Doppelganger, which was first shown on BBC Three on Sunday 1st February, with film shot on board a train and at St James station.

New Metro fares approved

The plan to make travel on the Tyne and Wear Metro more affordable has been approved. The new fares are to be introduced from 1st April and are part of the Mayor of the North East, Kim McGuinness’ pledge to make travel more affordable and match the price of bus tickets in the region.

For the first time since October 2019 there are three identical adverts running around the Manchester Metrolink network following the application of vinyls for xtb, a major international financial broker. The three trams to receive this advert are 3092, 3100 and 3101.
