Fares increased on Nottingham Express Transit

Single and “short-hop” tickets on Nottingham Express Transit have increased. Usually when fares go up there’s a lead in after an official press release but in this case it appears that the fares have just gone up without much pre-warning, leading to even more complaints than usual about the changes in fares.

£1.2 million paid out to cyclists in compensation in Edinburgh

It has been reported in local online media that around £1.2 million has had to be paid out in compensation by the City of Edinburgh Council to cyclists since 2012. The compensation has been paid to cyclists who have either suffered injuries or damage to their bikes after they slipped on the tracks or got their wheels stuck.

KeolisAmey Metrolink win Operator of the Year at Global Light Rail Awards

The Global Light Rail Awards took place again at the Honourable Artillery Company in London this year with various winners from across the world being announced – although with a heavy bias towards systems in the UK. Amongst the winners on the night were KeolisAmey Metrolink who were named Operator of the Year whilst there were also some rather interesting choices of award winners.

New apprentices start at Nexus – including on the Metro

Ten people – aged between 18 and 38 – have become the latest to start their apprenticeships with Nexus with training underway for their new careers. They have been recruited following extensive recruitment and will start new roles both to keep the Metro running and on other areas of transport operated by Nexus.

Luas Engineering Works in October

Services on Luas in Dublin will again be affected by engineering works this month. The works will be on the Red Line and won’t see any complete closures but will require the early finish and late start of services over a couple of weekends during the month.

In Pictures: Progress on the Metro Flow project

The Tyne and Wear Metro line between Pelaw and South Shields has been closed since 12th September to allow for major work to take place which includes the dualling of track from Pelaw to Bede. The Metro Flow project is being funded through the Transforming Cities Fund and should provide a major boost to capacity on the network once it is completed.

Woman suffers serious injuries after being hit by a tram

A woman was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after she was hit by a tram close to St Werburgh’s Road tramstop on Thursday 6th October. The incident happened at approximately 1235. Whilst the emergency services dealt with the incident and took the woman to hospital for treatment there was disruption for Metrolink services on the lines to East Didsbury and Manchester Airport. The former was completely suspended with services to the Airport starting and ending at Barlow Moor Road.

In Pictures: Season’s change and so do appropriate trams at Beamish!

As we are now officially in autumn the weather seems to be following suit with the hot temperatures of the summer seemingly now but a distant memory with cooler and wetter weather now prevalent. For Beamish this means that there is more use of the enclosed trams which at the moment means Sunderland 16 and Oporto 196 are seeing more usage with Blackpool 31 and Newcastle 114 taking a bit of a breather during midweek opening. Extra Metrolink services for Manchester Half Marathon

Double trams are set to run every 6 minutes on Manchester Metrolink’s Altrincham line to help get people to and from the Manchester Half Marathon which takes place on Sunday 9th October. The race is being run over a new route this year with the start close to Trafford Bar and the finish near Old Trafford tramstops.

Strikes to return on Tramlink

Drivers on London Tramlink are to go on another 48 hour strike next week as the pay dispute continues with the two parties seemingly no closer to reaching a resolution. The strike action had been temporarily suspended at the end of August but after further negotiations and a slightly revised offer the industrial action is back on.

Supertram service changes on Sunday 9th October

Sunday 9th October will see changes to services on the BLUE and YELLOW routes of Stagecoach Supertram because of emergency water works in Hillsborough. For the whole day all trams on these routes will terminate at Shalesmoor with Supertram tickets valid on local bus services.

Cars end up on the tracks at Cleveleys twice in little over a week

Tram services in Blackpool were disrupted twice in just over a week after motorists took a wrong turn and got their cars stuck on the tramway at Cleveleys. In both incidents trams were disrupted with no service able to run any further north than Little Bispham.

Blackpool Balloon 710 saved – to join the collection at Sandtoft

Another of the Fleetwood Heritage Leisure Trust collection of Blackpool trams has been rescued – and its one which should please most Blackpool tram enthusiasts as it is Balloon 710. The tram – made famous for its part in killing Alan Bradley in Coronation Street way back in December 1989 – is to be preserved at the Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft where it will be put on display.
