Work starts on Trafford Park Metrolink extension

Work has commenced on the latest Manchester Metrolink extension with the “first spades” into the ground this week as utility diversion and enabling works get underway. The 3.4 mile line will leave the current Metrolink network just after Pomona travelling to the Trafford Centre with services expected to start by 2020.

The first works will be advanced utility works and these are due to run concurrently with other enabling works. During these works some local traffic management measures will be required at sites on Barton Dock Road, Village Way, Village Place and Trafford Wharf Road.

Tony Lloyd, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “It’s great to see the first spades in the ground for yet another Metrolink line. Metrolink is one of Greater Manchester’s major success stories, helping to drive regeneration and boost local economies. Trafford Park is the largest industrial estate in Europe and deserving of first class transport links – and this new route also takes in other iconic destinations, from Old Trafford to the Trafford Centre.”

* Meanwhile details have also been revealed on the movement of the Park and Ride site at Oldham Mumps. The current site on Prince Street will be closed from Saturday 28th January and will be relocated to a site at Regent Street. The move is part of a land swap agreement between TfGM and Oldham Council and there will be 254 spaces at the new site.
