The month of September will see our world tour settle in Italy as we take a look at some trams running in the city of Turin.
Horse trams first starting running in Turin during 1871 with the final horse cars operating in 1900. Seven years before that electric trams started and it is that network which remains in the city in 2026. Today there are 10 tram routes which run for 57 miles.
We actually go back over 60 years ago to July 1964 for this first image as we see Peter Witt tram no. 1528 alongside the Duomo. Trams no longer run here with the whole square around the cathedral now being pedestrianised.
Although this is a black and white image take our word that the tram was in the green livery that all Italian urban transport used at the direction of Mussolini’s government in the 1930s. Trams now carry a yellow and white livery which is what the Peter Witt trams first carried when introduced.
