On Friday 31st July, the two heritage trams in service in Blackpool on the regular blue timetable were joined by Bolton 66 which was used to convey a private party, including two Mayors. The tram initially ran from Rigby Road depot to North Pier before heading south to the Pleasure Beach, where the guests disembarked to enjoy a visit to the theme park’s miniature railway before returning to the depot.
Guests on board the tram included the Mayors of both Manchester and Blackpool, as well as Alderman Keith Whitmore who is well known as a key supporter of the Heaton Park Tramway. Also present was Bryan Lindop, representing Blackpool Transport Services Ltd. and the Blackpool Heritage Trust. The opportunity was taken to promote the upcoming weekend event ‘Manchester Rocks Blackpool’ which is taking place on 8th & 9th August, at several venues in and around Manchester. Naturally, a Greater Manchester tram which is based in Blackpool was the ideal candidate for this occasion making Bolton 66 a great choice for the private party. The two Mayors will be attending the event at Heaton Park on the Saturday morning to sample a very different tramway.
The Heaton Park Tramway’s contribution to the two-day event will see all three of their resident Blackpool tramcars operating on both days, comprising Railcoach 280, Vanguard 619 and Brush car 623. It is planned to have four trams in service on Sunday 9th August with Manchester 765 joining the Blackpool trio, whilst there will be other seaside-style attractions such as donkey rides and a small beach area within the park itself. In addition, two other Blackpool trams – Railgrinder 1 and Balloon 702 – should be on display with the latter due to be opened for inspection by visitors. However, the star attraction will be 280 which will be making its final appearance before it heads back to Blackpool, where it will be used on heritage tours in its latter-day guise as 680 and painted in the 1990s style livery which will better suit its current condition.

Fantastic that the two groups excellent relationship continues to blossom. Its been clear for sometime the relationship between Blackpool & Manchester would be mutually beneficial and help both attractions develop. The goodwill and willingness to engage on both sides should be applauded.
